Hiya!

So, we’re just a few months out until probably the biggest movie of the year: Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel has been riding high already thanks to Spider-Man: Brand New Day but that success does come with a caveat. Technically, that film isn’t a Marvel movie; it’s a Sony Pictures movie. Sure, it has ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Sony still owns the movie rights to Spider-Man. I do think Marvel needs Avengers: Doomsday to be a bigger hit as, sad to say, the Marvel movies haven’t really been doing all that well since Avengers: Endgame. That’s probably a huge reason why they’re re-releasing it in cinemas soon.

Oh, they’re putting in under the guise of it being “necessary viewing” to be up to speed with Avengers: Doomsday. I like to think of it more of a cash-grab… a really smart cash grab because I’ll definitely be buying a ticket to see it just for the so-called extra stuff they added to it. Yep, call me a huge sucker. I don’t care. I want to re-live one of the best movie theater experiences ever.

I’m getting ahead of myself, though, because, as excited as I am for Avengers: Endgame Encore, I’m deathly hyped for Avengers: Doomsday. I do want to see Marvel recapture that Marvel magic from all those years ago. I was so excited that I read up on the rumored story leaks for the movie. While I did learn a lot from it, it also made the gears in my brain to start turning, mainly because, if the leaks are true, Avengers: Doomsday opens up the door for all of the dead characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to come back. The question that comes up after thinking that up, however, is if it’s a good idea. I’m torn about this so the only way for me to answer that is to debate with myself.

Okay, before I move on with debate, I will have to preface this entire thing with a possible SPOILER WARNING for Avengers: Doomsday. The rumored leaks are still just that: rumors. They haven’t been confirmed but there are signs pointing to them being true. Still, as I will be first describing why it’s even possible to “resurrect” dead characters after the events of Avengers: Doomsday, I will have to assume the leak is true and, if it is true, then I’ll be talking about Avengers: Doomsday’s story. So, yeah. SPOILER WARNING possibly.

Anyway, the main plot of Avengers: Doomsday is Doctor Doom‘s plan to merge the entire multiverse into one in the hopes of bringing back his wife and child. The rumored leaks suggest that, in the end of the movie, Doctor Doom succeeds and creates Battleworld, an amalgamation of all Marvel universes. This will lead directly into the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Avengers: Secret Wars.

So, with the multiverses merging, this does mean variants of other characters, including the ones we’ve seen fall throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, can return. They wouldn’t be the ones we know as, yeah, they’re already dead. These would be their doppelgangers from the other universes. It’s essentially like how Deadpool got the Wolverine from another universe to save his in Deadpool & Wolverine. He’s a Wolverine but not the Wolverine we know. Basically, when Doctor Doom merges the multiverse into one, he’ll also be bringing everyone over to Battleworld, including the variants of characters we’ve seen die.

A part of me wishes this to be true as this would be a very convenient way to kind of reset things in a nice way. Much like how everyone was so relieved to see Wolverine come back after his death in Logan. As good as that movie was, it was such a bummer to see him die. Everyone wanted him back, especially with the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as we wanted to see Wolverine pal around with the Avengers and other heroes. We never got to see that and, with him returning to the fold, we just might see that come to life in Avengers: Doomsday. I bet everyone will just squeal to see him do just that… if the rumors are true, anyway.

Then again, bringing people back to life kind of makes their sacrifice moot if they died heroically. The best example would be Black Widow. In Avengers: Endgame, Black Widow had to throw herself off a cliff in order to recover the Soul Stone. This was an important moment for the character as well as the movie and it raised the stakes as, if the rest of the Avengers didn’t succeed, her death would be for nothing. So, if we see her in Avengers: Doomsday, then it would come off as death doesn’t really mean a whole lot since we can always just pluck a different version of the character from another universe.

If you think about it, though, it’s not really the same character and it does open up the possibility for future storylines. I guess the best example for this is what they did with Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Gamora that we knew actually died in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos had to sacrifice her to get the Soul Stone for himself. She sort of returns when Thanos basically time travels to the future to face off against the Avengers in Avengers: Endgame. While this is technically the same Gamora, it’s also not as this version of Gamora didn’t experience the other stuff we saw her go through in the movies. This is why, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, she’s not part of the core group as this Gamora still has no connection with any of them. While I don’t think this was handled very well in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the potential was there to open up new stories for her as this gives writers free reign to take the character in different directions.

On the other hand, if these aren’t the original versions of the characters, then does it matter if they’re coming back? They are totally different characters and, while they might share some personality traits, they would still be different characters altogether. Basically, if they do return, it would mostly be there for fanservice. A little reward for longtime viewers who’ve stuck with the Marvel Cinematic Universe all these years. So, it would essentially be pandering to the audience.

That said, I, along with probably millions of fans, do love us some fanservice! Oh, we love to say it’s pandering to the lowest common denominator… but that’s all of us! We’re always going to be that guy who points at the screen and shout “I understood that reference!” We all want to feel how all of the time we spent watching these films was for something. It is indeed a nice reward for fans and, well, we all like to feel rewarded, don’t we?

So, in the end, do I want to see all of the fallen characters return? Honestly, yes and no. Obviously, I want their “resurrection” to be done in a way that works with the story. It won’t work if they just pop in and wave to the camera. It has to be meaningful to warrant them coming back to life. I also wouldn’t want them to bring back every character as, like with the case of Black Widow, it would cheapen their sacrifice. Still, if it’s done with some care, then I don’t think I would mind all that much in the end
