Well, D23 happened over the weekend and we got a whole lot of news and reveals coming out of Disney. They announced a decent amount of stuff, like sequels to Frozen and Zootopia. We also got some Star Wars stuff with teasers for Star Wars: Starfighter and the second season of Ashoka. But I would say the biggest bits of news came from their Marvel division. We got the reveal of the primary cast of Disney’s X-Men live-action movie reboot as well as the trailer for VisionQuest, which actually looks pretty good, in my opinion.

Of course, the highlight would be the new trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. I mean, it’s been a while since fans were actually excited for a new Marvel movie at this level. Now, what they showed did look suspiciously like what they supposedly showed off during Comic-Con. But this is the first time we actually got official video of this Special Look instead of the grainy cam footage from that event.

While I was impressed with this Special Look at Avengers: Doomsday, this did make me more worried that I might not like the movie. Why? Well, that’s because, so far, everything is lining up to what the leak describes. And I’m not sure I will like the story the leak says will happen in the film.

So, before I do continue as to why, I have to give out a possible SPOILER WARNING. There are no guarantees the leak is indeed on the up and up, no matter how close the trailers make it appear to be real. We have to take each leak with a grain of salt. But, just in case, I am possibly going to be talking about major plot points of Avengers: Doomsday. So, yeah, possible SPOILERS incoming.

Let’s go talk about the alleged plot leaks first. The basic summary is the multiverse is dying, leading to different universes fighting against each other with the winner getting to save their universe but dooming the other. Doctor Doom actually pretends to be a hero by warning the heroes about this and he devices a plan to save all of the multiverse. It turns out it’s all a trick and Doctor Doom’s actual plan is to consolidate the entire multiverse into one that he controls. In the climax of the film, the heroes from the rest of the surviving multiverses attack Doom to try to stop them.

The heroes fail. Doctor Doom enacts his plan and creates Battleworld, a world under his complete control. The End.

Now, there are a couple of reasons why the leaks might be real. For one thing, it’s already been announced the next Marvel movie is going to be Avengers: Secret Wars. So, how does that relate to why there’s a chance the leaks might be accurate. Well, it deals with the ending of Avengers: Doomsday wherein he creates Battleworld. This storyline does seem to mirror the events leading up to the 2015 Secret Wars comic book event. So far, the leaks line up.

Another reason why the leaks may be real is because they have predicted some key scenes we do see in the official videos released by Disney and Marvel. Things like Doctor Doom controlling massive Sentinels and Doctor Doom parrying Thor‘s attack a good number of weeks before the Special Look trailer was even shown at Comic-Con! It’s pretty uncanny how these specific moments could have been predicted way before the trailer was even made. So, once again, it certainly seems like the leaks are true.

But, here’s the thing: I don’t want them to be true. There are two reasons why this is so. The first reason is it makes the heroes look like idiots. Based on the leaks, Doctor Doom will be stringing along the heroes for a good chunk of the film’s runtime, maybe even half of it. They’ll mix in some fights between the Avengers and the X-Men to keep things from getting boring. But the thought of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes getting conned by a man named Doctor Doom is just wild to me. I guess they can get fooled because the man behind the iron mask is someone who looks exactly like their deceased Tony Stark. Still, you would think they would be a little more careful after their run-ins with people who can change their appearance like Loki or those who can conjure lifelike illusions like Scarlet Witch. They should have learned their lesson by then that they can be so easily duped.

But the biggest reason why I don’t want the leaks to be true is that ending. Doctor Doom wins in the end and the villain gets what he wants. And I don’t think this is the right thing to do at this moment. For one, this is Doctor Doom’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And, in his very first outing, he succeeds in his diabolical plan. Where’s the buildup? Where’s the slow burn of seeing his evil machinations bubbling to the surface and all of his little schemes, even his losses, actually part of his diabolical plan? I believe Doctor Doom, as the main villain, should earn his victory.

To explain my logic, let’s go look at Avengers: Infinity War and Thanos. Like with the supposed leaks, the villain wins in that film. Thanos didn’t come out from no where. He was teased way before then. So, when he did show up in Infinity War and actually won, it felt like he earned it. He worked diligently for years and we actually saw him working to achieve his goal. So, when we did see him, the bad guy, wipe out half of the galaxy’s population, we were upset… but we accepted it. However, I do understand the direction because Marvel were pretty much intending this entire Multiverse Saga to follow Kang the Conqueror being the main villain here. When that didn’t work out for various reasons, Marvel had to salvage what they had and inserted Doctor Doom in Kang’s place. It does kind of work out as, well, he did create Battleworld and start the Secret Wars storyline. Still, it does feel rather rushed, doesn’t it?

I also don’t think fans are ready to see the Avengers lose again. In fact, it will be pretty detrimental to the brand in a way. Remember, this is the first time the post-Phase Four heroes will be teaming up. And their first outing as a full-fledged team is going to be a colossal loss? That doesn’t sound good! It makes them look incredibly wimpy and incompetent! What’s even worse is, not only will the newbie heroes lose, returning heroes like Thor and Captain America will get swept up in the loss, making them look wimpy and incompetent as well! Imagine seeing these guys coming back after years of us waiting only for them to get spanked! That also doesn’t sound good!

Ultimately, production for Avengers: Doomsday is practically in the can. I know they’re going to do some reshoots to fix things here and there. But I don’t think they can really make major alterations to the story and the script, meaning the ending is the ending we’re going to get. If the leak is indeed true, then I honestly hope Marvel does a super good job with the movie to make me accept this terrible ending.

God, I hope so.
