San Diego Comic-Con 2026 is done and dusted. As usual, there was a lot of new announcements and reveals during the event. But, of course, the highlight was the Marvel panel. This is when they break the news about their upcoming projects and there were some major ones, like the revelation of reboot Ghost Rider film and a third Black Panther movie in the works. They also hyped up the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie by showing a new clip of the Wall Crawler and The Punisher teaming up to fight The Hulk. At least, that’s what I’m reading from the geek websites covering all of the Comic-Con stuff as I can’t find any clips online actually showing it.

What I can view online, however, are the leaks for the latest Avengers: Doomsday trailer they did show during the Comic-Con panel. Of course, the videos are all super grainy as they were just taken using audience members’ phones. I’m not going to link them as Marvel is taking all of these leaked videos very quickly so it would be useless in just a matter of hours. But I did see it and I also did see the official trailer Marvel put out a week or so ago. And after seeing both trailers, why am I just not feeling the hype for Avengers: Doomsday?

This definitely wasn’t the case for the other Avengers movie trailers. I was more than excited for each and every one of the previous films. But I’m just not feeling it for Avengers: Doomsday. Initially, I just thought what I’m feeling is superhero fatigue, something I actually didn’t believe in before and still don’t. After all, I was super excited for James Gunn‘s Superman movie and rightfully so as it was a great film. So, what’s the problem I have with Avengers: Doomsday?

Well, after some soul searching within myself, I can say it really isn’t the legendary superhero fatigue. Rather, it’s more Marvel’s fault because I personally don’t think the trailers are that good.

To be fair, one of the reasons why I just don’t think the trailers are great is my own silly expectations. Like I said just now, I was super hyped when the previous Avengers trailers came out. So, in my head, I was expecting to feel the same way with the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer. I was expecting it to blow my mind but the problem is there’s only so much they can do to when it comes to mashing together all of their previous Marvel projects into one film without it feeling formulaic and cliche. Yeah, I get they need to drop in the fanservice so us geeks can point at the screen and yell “I understood that reference” and it still does give me a little shot of adrenaline when they do. But even that feels like that’s getting a bit overused.

Another issue I have is I have no idea why Doctor Doom, the main villain of Avengers: Doomsday, is the bad guy. Now, Doctor Doom is one of Marvel’s greatest villains. Some would even say he’s Marvel’s greatest villain. But that means he does come up in a lot of stories in the comics. As such, he doesn’t have a “defining” villain story arc. A good example of what I mean by this is Thanos, the overarching big bad of Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. While Thanos has appeared a lot in the comics, he’s mostly known for The Infinity Gauntlet storyline. Like in the movies, this had Thanos gather all of the Infinity Stones in order to wipe out half of all life in the universe. And, like in Infinity War, he does succeed… for a brief time.

Infinity War was a huge deal way back in 1991, mostly because of how Thanos wiped out all of the heroes and villains in the Marvel universe in order to reach his goal. Even me, who was more of a DC comics reader, got swept up in the excitement because all of the comic book fans around me were all talking about it. In fact, I have to credit Infinity War for making me want to read more Marvel comics, which I did! So, when we knew that Thanos was going to be the overarching villain of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we all knew it was going to culminate in something like Infinity War, which, like the comic book series, was more than just a big deal. Thanos was a threat and we definitely needed all of Marvel’s heroes to join forces to try to take him down.

This just simply isn’t the case with Doctor Doom and Avengers: Doomsday. Comic book fans understand he’s a huge threat. But the thing is he’s been a threat for so many reasons in the past. There’s the time when he used mind control to finally take over the world in Emperor Doom. Or the time he took control of Wakanda’s vibranium stockpile in Doomwar. So, why is he the bad guy in Avengers: Doomsday? Well, the prevailing theory is the film is taking inspiration from 2015’s Secret Wars. This is where Doctor Doom combines all of the multiverses into one. And seeing how the next Avengers film is going to be called Avengers: Secret Wars and there appears to be no other Marvel films or television shows in production in between as well as the supposed leaked script summary, this does track.

Speaking of which, I do have to say the trailers themselves are essentially confirming the leaked plot is actually true. Now, I don’t intend this to be a post with spoilers so I won’t be talking about it too much. But I will say there are a lot of things that do line up and that’s really concerning for me. Why? Because I have read the supposed leaked Avengers: Doomsday plot summary and I do not like it. Like I said, I won’t be talking about it here because, if the leak is true, I will be spoiling the entire film. But, suffice to say, it feels like a downer and, after the run the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been having after Infinity War and Endgame, they need something to end on a high note. Still, everything does seem to point to Avengers: Doomsday getting a depressing ending.

So, I guess the question is what would I would’ve wanted to see in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer? Well, more Doctor Doom for one thing! It’s not enough to see all of the heroes saying how much of a threat Doctor Doom is. I want to see him monologuing about why he’s going to be trouble for all the heroes. After all, this is going to be the first time we get to see him! Oh, you can say we did get a glimpse of it in the trailers, like Doctor Doom stopping Thor‘s attack with just two fingers. Or how it looks like Doctor Doom is controlling Sentinels in one scene in the Comic Con video. That’s cool and all but I also need to see his motivation. Unlike a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s villains, Doctor Doom is a very complex character. He’s more like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thanos in that, while he does do a lot of bad stuff, Doctor Doom’s motives is actually for the good of humanity. He honestly believes the world would be better off in the loving embrace of Doctor Doom’s rule, which is why he wants to take over the planet. If that’s the case in Avengers: Doomsday, at least hint at it!

Of course, there’s still a ways before Avengers: Doomsday is released in December. That’s a whole five months from now. Between that time, I’m sure Marvel will release a bunch more trailers for the film. I do hope they show more than what they have because, in all honestly, the trailers have to be more than what they are right now.
