So, Disney and Marvel just released Avengers: Endgame in theaters in preparation for their actual “big ticket” movie of the year: Avengers: Doomsday. Okay, not exactly. The film they actually released is called Avengers: Endgame Encore and, as they had to do a lot of retconning with the Kang The Conqueror brouhaha a couple of years back, they had to make a huge pivot and quickly added Doctor Doom into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make him the big baddie. And in order to make everything sort of make sense because Marvel has been having trouble with their story continuity for the MCU lately, Avengers: Endgame Encore does have a few added scenes in an attempt to make everything make sense when Avengers: Doomsday rolls around in December.

So, in order to try to hastily explain why Doctor Doom is sticking his metal nose in the MCU’s business, Avengers: Endgame Encore added a few more scenes into the original movie. Essentially, they were plugged in as after credits scenes and worked in so they tease the plot of Avengers: Doomsday. And it does seem people are willing to go see it again as Avengers: Endgame Encore has already took in around $3.8 million in preview screenings. I can’t really say how much it’s going to earn as of this writing but it does seem like it’s going to make a decent chunk of change.

I, however, am not one of those fans who is eager to spend my money and roughly three hours of my time watching something I’ve seen already several times just to experience a whopping four extra minutes of new after credits scenes; scenes everyone who’s on the Internet already knows because all of the entertainment news sites have already talked about them. And, from what I’ve read, I don’t really see the need to watch them. In fact, I do think Disney and Marvel are doing a disservice to fans by doing this.

I guess I do need to talk about the extra four minutes Avengers: Endgame Encore added to sort of explain why I think this. So, despite it being readily available for everyone to read about, I’m still putting up the pre-requisite SPOILER WARNING for Avengers: Endgame Encore. I also will be talking about the alleged leak plot of Avengers: Doomsday so this might also be a SPOILER WARNING for Avengers: Doomsday if the leaks are true. You have been warned.

So, there are four new after credits scenes introduced in Avengers: Endgame Encore. The first one comes off directly after the final scene of Avengers Endgame with Steve Rogers/Captain America finally getting his happy ending and taking that dance with Peggy Carter. In Endgame Encore, the scene continues and their dance is interrupted with a knock on the door and it turns out to be Loki. Not the Loki that died in Avengers: Endgame, though. This is the Loki we saw in the television series and says he’s there to help them.

The next new after credits scene honestly should have been the after credits scene for Spider-Man: Brand New Day as it involves what happened to Bruce Banner/The Hulk after the events of that film. Bruce Banner is trying to find a way to suppress his Hulk alter ego when Doctor Doom teleports in and mentions he’s there for him. Like I said, this feels out of place because this happened in a different movie! It would have been so much more impactful if this was in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, right? After this, we hear the clanging of metal; the same one we heard when Tony Stark was making his Iron Man suit in the first ever Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Iron Man. However, it turns out, in Endgame Encore, it’s actually Doctor Doom fashioning his iconic iron mask.

The final new after credits scene is possibly the biggest reason to go see Avengers: Endgame Encore to me. It shows the Time Variance Authority members from the Loki television series watching a colliding of individual universes, an “incursion,” and the two universes are fighting each other in order to stay alive. They also realize the multiverse is collapsing. Dun-dun-duuun!

Like I said, this is the one I find the most interesting and the most important as this is the one setting up the premise for Avengers: Doomsday. But is it really worth buying a ticket and sitting through a three-hour movie just to see a minutes or two long scene? Yeah, I know Avengers: Endgame is a really good movie and worth rewatching. However, the way Disney and Marvel are marketing Avengers: Endgame Encore makes it feel icky. It comes off as they’re re-releasing Avengers: Endgame with these additional scenes to “prepare us for Avengers: Doomsday”. It’s like they’re asking us to pay money again for a movie we’ve already seen because, as I mentioned before, they bungled the entire Kang the Conqueror storyline and they’re putting out this retcon like an emergency patch for a video game.

Honestly, I, and I do believe a lot of fans who have stuck by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would have been more appreciative if they just released these scenes on Disney+. I know even that feels kind of icky as not everyone has Disney+. But then again, that would feel better because it would be Disney and Marvel rewarding the fans who actually have subscribed to Disney+ because they like the product. Having us fans pay money to see a movie that is already on Disney+ feels like they’re asking us to double dip into our wallets. Once for the Disney+ subscription and another time to buy a movie ticket. It just feels unfair.

That’s not to say I wouldn’t be against actually paying money to see Avengers: Endgame in the cinema again but just having four or so minutes more of new stuff just isn’t enough for me. They should give us more than just that, though. And I know this is going to sound crazy but, if Disney and Marvel announced they would show the first ten minutes of Avengers: Doomsday at the end of Avengers: Endgame Encore, then I know more people would be rushing to reserve their seat at the cinema to see it.

I know that seems insane to say as there’s no way the higher ups at Disney and Marvel would ever allow that but hear me out. From what I read, the first ten minutes of Avengers: Doomsday are going to be mindblowing. If the leaks are accurate, this is because Avengers: Doomsday will plunge us directly into the action with the Sam Raimi Spider-Man desperately trying to fight off Deadpool and Wolverine in order to save his universe. Ultimately, Spider-Man fails with Wolverine sacrificing himself to destroy the Sam Raimi Spider-Man universe with a bomb. It then cuts to Professor X watching the other universe explode with sadness. He had to do it else the X-Men universe perishes instead.

Now, let’s say they show this at the very end of Avengers: Endgame Encore. Wouldn’t you be incredibly excited to see Avengers: Doomsday? Wouldn’t everybody be excited to go see Avengers: Endgame Encore just to see that? I know I would. The thing is, even if Disney and Marvel did show it several months before Avengers: Doomsday, people will still go see it! Those ten minutes don’t exactly spoil anything, right? And would you be upset at seeing those 10 minutes of action and drama again during the start of Avengers: Doomsday? I don’t think so! Heck, I think they would welcome it!

It would be like how some video games would give you a demo of the first level of a video game or give you a limited time to play the early portion of one. Take Resident Evil 2 Remake and its demo. Capcom allowed players to try out the first portion of Resident Evil 2 Remake for thirty minutes before kicking you out of the demo. They just gave you a taste of what the game would play like. Did anyone complain about having to go through that section of the game when Resident Evil 2 Remake came out? No, they wholeheartedly welcomed the experience again! It would be the same thing if we saw the first ten minutes of Avengers: Doomsday at the end of Avengers: Endgame Encore!

But, sadly, Disney and Marvel didn’t have the foresight to do this. Instead, they just gave us four end credits which don’t really matter all that much and doesn’t really get you all that excited for Avengers: Doomsday. It just feels like something I have to watch to really understand what’s happening in Avengers: Doomsday.

I’m opting out of seeing Avengers: Endgame Encore for now. Maybe if someone invites me to go see it with them, I probably will go. But I’m not actively going to seek it out. It just seems like it’s not worth it. In the end, I don’t think it’s going to matter because I know there are still going to be a lot of people who do think seeing those extra four minutes is going to be worth their time or maybe they would like to relive the experience of seeing Avengers: Endgame on the big screen once again. I can’t fault them for being that way. So I hope they don’t fault me for not following suit.
