Three Hidden Gameplay Mechanic Predictions for Grand Theft Auto VI

You would think that the biggest thing in gaming last week would be the Gamescom Opening Night Live show. It should have been with all of the new games they showcased but leave it to Rockstar Games to go ahead and steal all of its thunder! And all they had to do was give us an extended look at the upcoming and long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI!

Over the years, I’ve learned to temper my expectations for super big releases like Grand Theft Auto games. But with the Extended Look, wow! Even I have to admit this was exceptional! From the graphics to the gameplay and to all of the stuff you seem to be able to do, Rockstar Games went above and beyond what a sandbox game can do. Honestly, I’m all ready to plop down and buy a PlayStation 5, which I failed to do because I was waiting for the price to drop (and sadly it actually went up). Still, the Extended Look just cemented the console to be a must-buy before November, which is when Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to be released (unless it gets delayed again).

But with the Extended Look, that did get my brain working as to what else Grand Theft Auto VI has in store for us. So, let me go speculate as to what Rockstar Games has up its sleeve when it comes to the game.

#1 Your relationship status will influence the game’s ending

So, Grand Theft Auto VI only has two main characters: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. The trailer does show that they’re in a relationship but the main story actually takes place some time in the future with Lucia Caminos getting out of prison and Jason Duval picking her up. Rockstar Games has kept really quiet about the status of their actual relationship.

Rockstar Games has actually confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI does have a relationship system of sorts but has been mum on how it will affect the game as a whole. While I wholly think this will impact the chemistry between Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos when committing crimes, I believe this is there mostly for storyline purposes.

Why touch grass when you can hold hands in a video game?

My prediction is, depending on how you develop their relationship, this will specifically affect the ending. If you’re mostly business partners throughout or just remain cordial with each other, Jason and Lucia will eventually turn on each other and you’ll have to choose who you want to control by the end. If you’re in a romantic relationship but don’t take things to the limit, one of them will sacrifice themselves so the other will get away. In this case, you will have to play the one making the sacrifice.

Now, if you take your romantic relationship to its highest possible level, both of them will escape or they might both die. I’m still not sure as, from what I understand, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are based on the historical Bonnie and Clyde. And, if you know your history (and I know you do), Bonnie and Clyde didn’t exactly ride into the sunset after their crime spree, did they?

#2 The duo’s reputation/honor will affect your Wanted levels

Rockstar Games didn’t really show it during the Extended Look but they did elaborate later regarding how the Wanted system works in Grand Theft Auto VI. Besides the traditional Wanted levels, there are now other things to consider as the police will now be looking for specific things, such as the make of your vehicle, your physical description and even if you’re working as a pair or not. Basically, it’ll be easier for you to get away or avoid the police if you change those little things… that is, until they get updated by witnesses or cameras.

What they haven’t elaborated on in detail is the new honor/reputation system. From what little information I’ve gathered on it, the game’s honor/reputation system is baked in with how people will perceive you. If you act courteous, you’ll gain more honor. If you act all hostile and escalate an already dangerous situation, people will be more ready to report you to the police.

Now, while I don’t really have any basis for this, I do think this will also impact how readily bystanders will both recognize you on the street as well as if they’ll want to report you. If you act kind of like a gentleman (or lady if you’re controlling Lucia) when committing crimes, the general public will actually even side with you, treating you like a modern day Robin Hood in a way. So, when you’re committing a crime, they might not call the police because they “admire” you. Heck, they might even cheer you on or help you get away from the cops!

#3 Jason and Lucia will have “preferred job skills”

Another thing Rockstar Games elaborated on is how Grand Theft Auto VI will have “RPG elements” built in. Specifically, you’ll have to track things like the pair’s weight, their fitness levels and even how much time they sleep. I do see these things affecting gameplay in some way or another, like how lack of sleep can make them more sluggish or, if they become overweight, they might be able to take more damage or something along those lines.

However, one thing I am predicting is that both Jason and Lucia will have “preferred jobs” in a sense. In the Extended Look, we get to see Lucia as the getaway driver during one scenario and this made me think if Rockstar Games actually tried to differentiate the two main characters in more ways than their gender.

The Extended Look did kind of hint what may be some of the differences between Jason and Lucia. You can actually see Lucia’s healthbar, during her hand-to-hand fight scene, is much smaller than Jason’s. This might be early in the game and you might be able to increase it through exercising, dieting and getting enough sleep. But what if there’s much more to this? What if both Jason and Lucia have starting abilities which you can improve throughout the game?

Is it because Lucia is a girl? For shame, Rockstar Games!

What I’m thinking is that, while both Jason and Lucia can do essentially the same things like driving and shooting, they will be better at some things than the other. For example, Lucia, as someone who grew up in the streets, might be better when it comes to driving sporty and fast cars as well as more proficient with smaller weapons, such as handguns. Jason, on the other hand, since he enlisted in the Army when he was younger, would have better control with bigger, bulky vehicles like trucks and also be better at handling weapons like assault rifles.

Of course, all their skills, even the ones they’re not really good at, can be improved by doing the various stuff around the city. They did show off some possibilities of this like the shooting range and the race tracks. So, you can actually train Lucia at the shooting range so she can improve on how to use an assault rifle while Jason can go to the race track to get better at driving race cars.

BONUS: Customizable safe houses

Although I have no reason to think this, I have the weird feeling Rockstar Games will finally make safe houses customizable in Grand Theft Auto VI. In fact, the only reason why I think this is because, in the Extended Look, the apartment we see is clearly Lucia’s. It’s just too flamboyant for someone like Jason. But in the earlier trailers, we do see a different safe house and it does seem like this is the first safe house Jason and Lucia own as Lucia comments that “this is just the start for us.”

So, why does the Extended Look give us a very colorful looking safe house when, in the earlier trailers, we only see a very drab place? So, I’m assuming the one we see in the Extended Look is Lucia’s place which the two of them also bought much later in the game. And I’m assuming it’s also possible to furnish the safe houses to whatever the player wants, including the style Lucia would like.

Like I said, this is just a guess but, man! Wouldn’t it be cool if this were the case?
