Last week, I talked about my love for wrestling and how I don’t care if it’s fake or not. That got me thinking of another “scripted” show that I love. It’s relatively new but I just can’t get enough of it. That show is Marvel’s Agent Carter.
The show follows Peggy Carter, Steve Rogers’ love interest from the first Captain America film and takes place after that movie. With the war over, Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) has settled down and has become a member of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, a special government agency. However, being a woman in the male-dominated sexist world of the 40s and 50s, she’s usually assigned to secretarial duties… despite being a highly trained combat officer and incredibly intelligent.
I remember liking the character when she first appeared in Captain America: The First Avenger. There was just something about the character refusing to be treated as “just a woman” and wanting to be treated as an equal. This was only expanded during the Agent Carter One-Shot that was included in the Iron Man 3 DVD/Blu-Ray. I really loved that particular One-Shot because they finally gave a short film focusing on a female comic book character. She even got her own short firm ahead of Black Widow!
I thought that was over with and that would be the last we would see of Peggy Carter. But, to my surprise (and delight), Marvel announced they were making a series based on it! Well, it’s a mini-series (only 8 episodes long? But I want more!) but I’ll take whatever I can get!
Call me an old soul but I just love the atmosphere and setting of the time period. There’s something about the 40s and 50s time period that I really like. The lines and curves of the cars. The fashion of the suits and dresses of the period. I just love the retro look of Agent Carter! Okay, maybe the music of the period is the exception but everything else is just great.
I also love the concept of Agent Carter. It’s all about a woman living in a man’s world. While they may have pulled the “men and women are all equal” thing with other TV shows like Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Dark Angel and Nikita (shows I’ve never watched by the way), those shows were set during modern times. I don’t think they had to go through the kind of sexism Peggy Carter had to go through!
Then there’s the character herself, Agent Peggy Carter. She’s not only strong; she’s smart and cunning, too! Once in a while, Agent Carter will use the sexism to her advantage. In the first episode, she dresses up as a blonde bombshell to charm her way into the office of her target. She actually used a weakness (being a woman in a sexist time period) to her advantage. I know that’s been done before but it was pulled off so well by Hayley Atwell!
I think we do need more strong female lead characters like Agent Carter. This show actually shows how being a strong woman should be. Kicking butt when needed but also using femininity to your advantage. It’s a great show. I know it’s only 8 episodes but I do hope we see more of Agent Carter in the future.
And while we’re on the topic of shows based on comics, I wonder if we’re actually ready to have even more comic book characters invade the small screen. I’ll talk about that next time!
