I’ll Review Anything: Sweet Ecstasy’s Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions

You may not know this but I actually take a good two to three months preparing for Burger Month. It may not be a huge thing for a lot of people but, hey, I take the business of eating and reviewing burgers seriously! As much as possible, I don’t just want to review the more well-known burger joints I can find in the city. I try to find the lesser known places that sell burgers because, hey, why not?

A few months ago, I was discussing my hunt for different burger joints with my friend Angela and she mentioned this place I’ve never heard of before. It’s called Sweet Ecstasy and it’s located close to the end of Jupiter Street in Makati. I actually thought it was a joke since, well, what kind of name is that for a place that specializes in burgers? Sweet Ecstasy? That sounds more like a place that would serve dainty little overpriced cupcakes. But since it was a unknown place (at least to me anyway), I decided to take a chance and try out the silly little named burger place.

When I did find Sweet Ecstasy, the look of the place didn’t exactly inspire confidence. I’m not sure what it looked like before but, when I did get there, I thought it looked like one of those weird street burger places. It definitely not what I expected from a restaurant along Jupiter Street.

There was no indoor area to speak of and that made me start getting second thoughts about actually eating here. But my fears of the place was alleviated quite a bit as I did see that there were a good number of people eating at Sweet Ecstasy. That’s always a good sign.

I then went to the front window, which was pretty much a hole-in-the-wall. At least it was a rather fancy hole with nice windows. I was actually surprised at the… how do I say this… unpretentiousness¬†of their burger options. In the strictest sense, Sweet Ecstasy only has three kinds of burgers: a hamburger, a cheeseburger and “the double” which is simple a double patty burger. That’s it! No blue cheese variations. No pineapple or whatever. Just good old burgers. I guess they’re really confident that their burgers are so good, they don’t need hide behind “specialty” burgers here at Sweet Ecstasy!

Very spartan look, ain't it?

That should limit the number of people who say “Hmmm… I don’t know what burger I should get.”

You do have a choice on what kind of onions to put on your burger, which I actually think is rather brilliant and does allow for some customization. I got myself a cheeseburger with caramelized onions. Of course, I had to get myself a side order of “fantastic fries” because, what would a burger meal be without a side order of fries? I actually was thinking of getting a milkshake to go with my burger but, well, I’m lactose intolerant so I didn’t think that would be a good idea, especially since I couldn’t find a decent restroom near the location. So I got a soda instead.

After roughly 10 minutes, I picked up my Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions with fries from the window. I do have to say that, despite it’s very no-frills look when it comes to presentation, I do have to commend Sweet Ecstasy for giving me a pleasantly juicy looking burger! I have to say I was rather surprised at how good the burger looked! The patty was rather thick and they actually took the time to melt the cheese instead of just putting on top of a good burger! I love me some melted cheese so the cheeseburger looked really good in my opinion. The burger was wrapped up rather tight in the packaging so I really couldn’t take a good look at the inside to check on the onions. Well, I guess I just have to dig in to see if they got it right!

What? No fancy plates? How disappointing!

When I took my first bite and tasted it, simply put, I was amazed at how good Sweet Ecstasy’s cheeseburger tasted! It was really, really good! The meat was rather juicy yet didn’t taste oily in any way. The bun itself was a perfect compliment to the burger as it did a remarkable job of actually staying together while sopping up the fat of the burger. Oh, and they did get my order right and used caramelized onions… and they were fantastic as well!

I honestly have to say that Sweet Ecstasy’s Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions is one of the best burgers I’ve ever had! I don’t make that statement likely! I really enjoyed eating it. There was just something magical about it and it’s as close to the perfect burger as I’ve ever tried! I guess it’s because it feels like a really hearty burger. It’s just a really good beef patty in a bun!

If I were to nitpick, I do kind of wish there was just a little more lettuce maybe? Or maybe give the option to have it with bacon. Because bacon always make everything better? But… nah! The burger is already good as it is; why fix something that isn’t broken?

A very no-frills but juicy looking burger.

The “perfect burger” looks rather plain, doesn’t it?

Oh, I do have to also mention the “fantastic fries” that I ordered along with my burger. As the name suggests, they were “fantastic.” They were really crispy and tasted great. I do think that some may complain that they may be a little¬†too crunchy as they weren’t soft on the inside. Still, really good fries to go with a really great burger.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with Sweet Ecstasy’s Cheeseburger with Caramelized Onions. Despite having a rather “non-burger-like” name, Sweet Ecstasy does serve probably one of the best burgers out there. I will definitely have to find the time to go back here. And I really have to thank Angela for her suggestion. Thanks, Angela!
