Like every year, Halloween just seemed to sneak up on me. That’s kind of the default because we generally skip to celebrating Christmas over here in the Philippines. As such, we’re not really big on dressing up for the spookiest holiday of the year. I’ve never really been much for going to parties anyway so the idea of dressing up for a costume party never really appealed to me… but I do get the appeal. It’s silly fun and you get to flex either your creative imagination or the contents of your wallet.
As I’ve never really gone to a costume party, I don’t really have anything on hand that I would consider a costume. But I do think I’m creative enough to put together a costume here and there using the things I might have strewn around the house. I mean, I’ve done it last year and we’ve been doing so for nearly ten whole years now. So, why not try to use my noggin and think up three more quick costumes for both boys and girls!
Boy #1: Guile from Street Fighter
With the new live-action Street Fighter movie out in theaters, I’m guessing a lot of the promotional stuff has already hit the mainstream zeitgeist in one way or another. In general, the easiest costumes to put together at short notice from the Street Fighter franchise would be Ryu and Ken as all you would essentially need is a karate gi with ripped sleeves and a black belt and you’re pretty much good to go. But we’ve already mentioned that almost a decade ago. However, there is someone else you can cosplay as and you can also use that novelty popcorn bucket you got when you watch the Street Fighter movie!
Guile’s outfit has always been easy to assemble. You’d just need a green sleeveless undershirt, cargo pants (preferably with a camo print design) and combat boots. Oh, and you’d need to stencil in the American flag on both your shoulders. The problem has always been the hair as Guile’s ridiculous flattop has always been difficult to get right, especially on a budget. Well, with the Guile popcorn bucket, that solves the problem! The guys behind it even were so kind to include a chin strap, meaning you are supposed to wear it!
As we’ve started with a costume from a movie for the boys, we might as well start the girls off with a costume from a movie as well. Obsession was one of the year’s biggest surprise hits of this year. It even launched relative unknown Inde Navarette into superstardom, thanks to her acting chops. Well, if you have pretty good acting chops as well (and really good control of your facial muscles), then you might consider dressing up as Nikki from Obsession this Halloween!
Although you would technically have your pick regarding what outfit Nikki wore throughout Obsession, I do recommend picking the clothing she word during the backwards walking scene since that’s the one that seems to stick out (and even became her skin in Fortnite). You would need a red halter top (with a zebra print if possible), hot pants and knee-high boots. Optionally, you can also add some blood makeup on your face. But all of that would be for naught unless you can pull of the creepy facial expressions Inde Navarette pulled off in the film. You might also want to practice walking backwards as well?
Oh, you can try to truly complete the look if you have a guy with you dressed up as Bear. But Bear sucks as a human being. So, don’t. You wouldn’t want your male companion to suck, now would you?
Boy #2: Indiana Jones
As I’ve mentioned earlier, we’ve been putting together these last-minute Halloween costume ideas for almost a decade. I thought we’ve already gotten the most obvious ones out of the way and we now have to dive a little deeper into what other costume ideas we can scrounge up. As much as possible, we try not to repeat any of the suggestions we’ve made in the past. Which is why I’m honestly very surprised none of us mentioned Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones Jr. before!
Although he is a very iconic character, it’s deceptively simple to throw together an Indiana Jones costume. The most obvious items you would need to scrounge for would be a brown fedora, a brown leather jacket (hopefully an aviator jacket if you can), a tan long sleeved shirt, khaki pants and a pair of work boots. Of course, to really complete the look, you would need a bullwhip. That’s probably the most difficult thing to find but you can easily craft one at home. All you would need is some significant length of rope and then tie one end to some kind of handle. Heck, if you’re really in a pinch, you don’t even need the handle! It’s just for decoration anyways!
Girl #2: Ms. Rachel
I don’t have kids so there really isn’t any impetus for me to watch any kind of children’s programming and I will admit I am very behind the times when it comes to that topic. So, when someone from a children’s program manages to break through all of the crap I like and manages to show up into my feeds, I know that person is a big deal. Ms. Rachel may have come from out of nowhere from where I’m sitting (and I can’t say I understand the appeal). But I will say she has one of the easiest outfits to assemble.
To dress up as Ms. Rachel, you would need a pink short sleeved shirt, a pink headband, denim overalls and pink or white sneakers. The last bit I’m not exactly sure which is more iconic as, from the images I’ve seen, she usually wears white sneakers but her official doll has her in pink sneakers. I don’t think it’s really that important, though. What is more important is definitely the denim overalls, which might not be in your closet. You might have to buy a pair but, if you do, at least you have something functional to wear when you go… gardening. I don’t know.
Boy and Girl #3: Cosmo and Wanda from The Fairly OddParents
Even though cartoons have kind of grown up and have become more serious, making them both for kids and adults, there are still cartoons that are definitely more askewed for a younger audiences… but adults still enjoy watching because of how funny they are. One of those cartoons, in my opinion, would be The Fairly OddParents. While the later seasons have definitely dropped in quality (did anyone actually like Sparky and Chloe Carmichael?), the show was actually pretty good. And has a banger of a theme song!
So far, I’ve put together costumes for individual boys and girls. I think it’s about time I suggested a couples costume pair with Cosmo and Wanda. For Cosmo, you would need to find a white long sleeved shirt, black pants and black shoes. For Wanda, just find yourself a yellow short sleeved shirt, black pants and black shoes.
The clothing doesn’t sell the look. It’s the accessories and they would be pretty easy to DIY yourself. For the wands, those are just black sticks with yellow stars at the end. The crown can be a little bit more tricky but, essentially, all you’d need is a headband and glue a yellow crown on top. The fairy wings would be the most difficult but you can cut out the wings from a large illustration board and then attach them to a belt. The wings don’t really need to be really huge. Now, if you really want to embody Cosmo and Wanda, you might want to go the extra mile and dye your hair green and pink, respectively.
