Well, Not E3 was last week and we got a lot of games that got revealed throughout back then. This is especially true for Summer Game Fest. Geoff Keighley has a lot of contacts in the gaming industry and he made the show to allow them to promote their upcoming products. This year’s Summer Game Fest was pretty good. Okay, it wasn’t the greatest but there were some really good reveals. I mean, the very first reveal and the very last reveal were awesome, in my opinion, of course.
While a lot of websites love to give awards regarding what were their favorite reveals or moments during Summer Game Fest, I like to do something different by highlighting some of the more, shall we say, interesting moments that caught my eye for one reason or another. These moments struck me not because they were hype inducing. Rather, they were just the moments I thought deserve a special mention. So much so that I believe these moments deserve some kind of award!
So, let’s go check out the “award worthy” moments from this year’s Summer Game Fest.
The “Yep, that’s a Resident Evil Game” Award
The “Yep, that’s a Resident Evil Game” Award goes to the game that tries to conceal their true identity but they simply did not do a good enough job for one reason or another. The developer do various tricks to try to hide it’s a Resident Evil game but, the instant you see it, it’s more than obvious it’s a Resident Evil game.
And the winner of The “Yep, that’s a Resident Evil Game” Award goes to… Resident Evil Veronica!
They tried. Capcom tried their best to design Resident Evil Veronica’s trailer. They purposefully used a first-person viewpoint for the trailer so it wouldn’t show Claire Redfield. They even created a seemingly totally new introduction to the game. Instead of that action packed escape attempt from one of the European Umbrella branches, Claire gets captured while visiting Chris Redfield‘s place. Very different from the original Code: Veronica game.
I wasn’t fooled, however. I knew almost immediately this was going to be a Resident Evil version. Why? Because Capcom’s RE Engine, although it can pump out really brilliant polygonal models and graphics, does have a certain kind of… sheen on the characters. This, coupled with the general way Capcom has been designing the character models for the Resident Evil games that use the RE Engine made it very apparent. The instant I saw the old lady open the door, I instantly thought “Ooh… Resident Evil!”
The Most Surprising Guest Character of the Night Award
The Most Surprising Guest Character of the Night Award goes to the game that shows off a new character that you just wouldn’t expect to see. It could be a guest character or some popular icon that just so happens to pop up in a game and you just wouldn’t see it coming.
And the winner for The Most Surprising Guest Character of the Night Award goes to… Tupac from Stranger Than Heaven!
Ah, you probably thought it was going to be Tifa, huh? Well, she would have been a lock to win this award because, in all honesty, I didn’t think the rumors were true. But it’s just more surprising to see Tupac going to be in Sega‘s upcoming Stranger Than Heaven for a couple of reasons. The biggest one is, well, isn’t he supposed to be deceased? Second, I don’t really see the purpose of him being in the game. Sure, I get Snoop Dogg was friends with the guy and explained that they got permission from Tupac’s family to add his likeness to the game. Still, it just feels strange to see someone who passed away thirty years ago be brought to life in a video game set in Japan and way before he was even born.
So, yeah. If Tupac in a Japanese gangster game was on your Summer Game Fest bingo card, you must be the luckiest gambler ever.
The Most Generic Title for an Upcoming Video Game Award
You would think, with all of the effort they make into making the gameplay great and intuitive, pumping more money into presentation and marketing, all video games would get really snappy and memorable titles. Sadly, this isn’t the case all the time and Most Generic Title for an Upcoming Video Game Award is given to the game with the most unimaginative and uninspired name during Summer Game Fest.
And the winner for The Most Generic Title for an Upcoming Video Game Award goes to… Aurogon Shanghai‘s upcoming Swords of Legends!
Now, this isn’t a hit on the gameplay footage they did show off. I mean, it looks fine but it does look like a lot of the other Soulslike games out there. Rather this is a hit on how plain and boring the name is. The thing is, I did some research on Souls of Legends and it’s apparently a kind of a spinoff of a popular Chinese video game series called GuJian, which basically translates to Swords of Legends. The franchise is also big enough that they even made a live-action television series based on it!
So, now I get why they had to call it Swords of Legends. It’s kind of their brand and they obviously would want to ensure fans would recognize it. But the problem is that, outside of Japan, not many people, including myself, has heard of this franchise so that brand recognition is kind of moot for the rest of the world. The best thing they can do is just keep the original Chinese name of “GuJian” but add the “Swords of Legends” subtitle to it. At least GuJian sounds mysterious but simple enough for most non-Chinese speakers to remember!
