Episode 649: Five Video Game Franchises That Need Reviving

Hiya!

We live in a world where we claim we like creativity and new experiences. In reality, we’re happy with all the regurgitated stuff which gets thrown our way. I mean, that’s the only explanation I can think of as to why we gobble up sequels. I don’t think that’s bad as familiarity is safe and, well, safe is good. We know we like it so why wouldn’t we want more of it. This is also the reason why we get a lot of sequels in our video games and, why the heck not? One of my most anticipated games for this year is Resident Evil: Requiem! If it looks good, why shouldn’t I want it?

Then again, there are some video games which I just adore which have not gotten any sequels. In fact, you can say some of these franchises are already dead. Since my mind is filled with sequels, here are just five video game franchises which deserve a new entry or two!

#1 The Sims

I have the sick feeling this will not be the only time an Electronic Arts IP will be on this list. Brrrrr…

Now, you may be saying why am I including The Sims on this list as it’s technically not dead. After all, Electronic Arts is still pumping out content and DLC for The Sims 4, the latest entry of the series. Well, it’s because they don’t have any plans to make a 5th entry to The Sims! Right now, the developers behind all of The Sims games are focusing on a totally new game codenamed Project Rene. Although Project Rene is being touted as “the next evolution of The Sims,” they are also quick to clarify this isn’t a proper sequel to The Sims.

Well, it’s now been 14 whole years since The Sims 4 was released so I was expecting a proper sequel to be out by now. Then again, I kind of understand why Electronic Arts don’t have any plans to make The Sims 5. Did I mention they’re still putting out DLC content that you have to pay for out? I know I did.

#2 Parasite Eve

What? No 4th Birthday?

All of the Parasite Eve game star Aya Brea, a detective in New York. If I were to describe the gameplay, it would be a mixture of Resident Evil with Final Fantasy‘s Active Time Battle system. That’s regarding the first game, though, as that’s the only game I really have vivid memories of. I remember my brother playing Parasite Eve II but I don’t really remember much about it. For the 3rd game, the weirdly titled, The 3rd Birthday, I have no idea. My brother didn’t have a PlayStation Portable, much less The 3rd Birthday.

Even so, the mere fact the first Parasite Eve left a huge impression on me means there is something special about it. I have heard some fans wanting Square Enix to bring back the series in one form or another. While a sequel may be out of the question, I do believe a remake or some sort of the first game would sell really well. It would, at the very least, allow me to see if it’s actually any good!

#3 Valkyria Chronicles

God, I love these games. Well, the 2 games in the franchise I could play, anyway.

I generally avoid tactical RPGs. They’ve never really been my cup of tea because of all the waiting you usually have to do while waiting for your opponent to do their moves. I also don’t really think it’s all that fun to move units on a board like chess pieces. Valkyria Chronicles sidesteps those issues as there is an action element involved with positioning your characters, trying to avoid incoming fire and movement is more free flowing. I played the heck out of Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 4 but I never got the chance to play the 2nd and 3rd entries as SEGA, in their infinite wisdom, locked them on the PlayStation Portable.

I would just love it if SEGA would make a 5th game in the Valkyria Chronicles game and, no, Valkyria Revolution doesn’t count! If SEGA thinks it would be too much work, then I would appear to their good nature to, at the very least, port over Valkyria Chronicles 2 and Valkyria Chronicles 3 to modern consoles or PC. You’ll have my as well as the fans eternal thanks when you do, SEGA.

#4 Dino Crisis

How about throwing some of the Remake love over to this franchise, Capcom?

The concept for the Dino Crisis games is pretty simple. It’s Capcom‘s Resident Evil games but, instead of zombies and virus infected monsters, you’re fighting dinosaurs! That’s a winning concept right there! While the series was never as popular as Resident Evil, Dino Crisis did garner a good fanbase, which includes me because I loved dinosaurs growing up! It’s a shame Capcom decided to make the series end on Dino Crisis 3, which made the gameplay more action oriented… once again following the Resident Evil franchise’s footsteps.

I’m not really familiar with the stories of the games and, if I remember correctly, they weren’t actually any good. This is one of the reasons why I would love to see Capcom do a proper remake as they can expand the story and add things to make them more engaging. Oh, I would also love to see what dinosaurs would look like on their proprietary RE Engine. I just know they would look cool!

#5 Mass Effect

I told you Electronic Arts would be back!

Now, I may be jumping the gun here as, last November, BioWare said they were “hard at work” at a new Mass Effect. After the disastrous glitchy launch of Mass Effect: Andromeda and the very disappointing release of BioWare’s other titanic franchise, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, I’m not that optimistic. I also believe a lot of former fans of the franchise are not willing to give Mass Effect another shot.

Still, even with all of that, I would definitely like to see another game set in the Mass Effect universe. For all of its flaws and after it was patched all the way to heck, Mass Effect: Andromeda was actually pretty good. As long as they don’t rush the project and really make sure the game is ready before releasing, I will be one of the first people to play the next Mass Effect game.

BONUS: PlayStation Home

The saying is true: You can’t go (PlayStation) home again.

Growing up, I really didn’t play a lot of video games besides The Sims. So, when I saw PlayStation Home, I fell in love with it. This was the game I consistently played on my brother’s PlayStation 3 all those years ago. It helped me memorize the button layout of the controller. It helped me get comfortable with playing video games in general. I also spent a good chunk of my allowance on my avatar!

I was crushed when I learned they were shutting down PlayStation Home. I’ve burned much of my time just milling around here. So, I know there really isn’t a market for a game like this, but a part of me really wishes Sony would make another version of PlayStation Home again.

Byee!
