Hiya!
Wrestlemania is just a few weeks away and, in all frankness, I’m not all that hyped for it. All of the matches that have been made aren’t all that, in my opinion. We have Seth Rollins vs Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship. Kurt Angle vs Baron Corbin. I guess I can sorta go behind The Miz vs Shane McMahon and Triple H vs Batista in a No Holds Barred match. It’s also rather odd to see that the Wrestlemania card has yet to be filled. As of now, there isn’t a confirmed match for Daniel Bryan’s World Championship, Sasha Banks and Bayley’s Women’s Tag Team belts as well as the other championships. We’re roughly three weeks until The Showcase of the Immortals but we still don’t know all of the matches? That’s insane!
But there is one match that really wanted to see. It was something they hinted at strongly during the Royal Rumble. That match was the current RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey vs the winner of this year’s Royal Rumble, “The Man” Becky Lynch.
To the WWE Universe, this is a dream match that didn’t take place. It should’ve happened during Survivor Series last year but, thanks to an errant forearm by Nia Jax which crushed Becky Lynch’s “face,” we didn’t get to see it. The Man was replaced by Charlotte Flair. I will say that, despite being just the second choice of the WWE Universe, Charlotte did a spectacular job against Ronda Rousey at Survivor Series. But everyone knows what we wanted to see was The Man going toe-to-toe against The Baddest Woman on the Planet.
But leave it to WWE to give us what we wanted and then spoil it with some really dumb decision making. Instead of giving us the dream match we wanted, the match that we desperately wanted to see during last year’s Survivor Series, the one we thought you promised during the Royal Rumble, they had to try to fix something that wasn’t broken. For some strange reason (ie. Vince McMahon’s brain), the WWE inserted Charlotte Flair into the mix, making it a Triple Threat match.
This is a problem in so many levels. One of the issues is the rather convoluted story as to how this happened in the first place. We first had to go through the entire Stone Cold Steve Austin process. This involves The Man upsetting the entire McMahon Family with her abrasive nature, leading to Vince McMahon suspending Becky Lynch until after Wrestlemania. He then had to give Ronda Rousey an opponent at Wrestlemania and he did with Charlotte Flair.
This led to a match at Fastlane between Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch and, if The Man won, she would be inserted into the Wrestlemania bout. Of course, Becky won. But before that, there were a lot of screwy things going on that didn’t need to happen. There was the entire Ronda Rousey turning heel from out of nowhere. Don’t get me wrong; I was always a big proponent of making Ronda Rousey a heel. It just fits her personality more than the grinning goody-two-shoes she was when she started. The Baddest Woman on the Planet should’ve been bad all this time. I’m not mad at the change; what I don’t agree with is the timing. It’s just so convenient to make Rousey the heel since Becky Lynch is a mega-face now.
But back to the topic at hand. I don’t like all the twists and turns the WWE had to put us through to get to this Wrestlemania match. It’s technically not Charlotte fault. The blame mostly falls on the Creative folks in the WWE offices and it just so happens that practically all of these twists and turns revolve around her.
It would have been so much better if it were just a straight up feud between Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch the same way the entire John Cena vs The Rock feud was a few Wrestlemanias ago was. Say what you will about John Cena and maybe you’re upset with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for just returning to the WWE whenever he has a movie to promote. It doesn’t matter what you think about them (see what I did there?) because their feud was great and the buildup to their Wrestlemania match was great because it was just these two guys itching to get their hands on one another. It was simple, easy to understand and straight to the point. That’s what made it great.
The WWE threw out a lot of potential banter between Rousey and Lynch when they decided to add Charlotte into the mix. Oh, I’m not totally sure of Ronda on the mic but she does a whole lot better ever since she broke bad which I said is what they should’ve done in the first place but that’s besides the point. Even if Rousey was terrible on the mic, I have no doubt that Becky Lynch would make up for it with her general style and how much gusto she gives. But since Charlotte’s also there, a lot of the fire and fury that could be focused between the other two has to be diluted as they also need The Queen to get a few shots in. It just makes any venom and bad blood between Rousey and Lynch seem not as heated.
What hurts this even more is that we never saw that Rousey vs. Lynch match in Survivor Series. Becky Lynch’s popularity was just stating to skyrocket but she fully embraced her new role and persona of The Man. That was shaping up to be one hell of an epic match and I even wrote an entire piece stating why Becky Lynch should beat Ronda Rousey before Survivor Series aired. We never did get that match because of Nia Jax’s meaty right hook across The Man’s face, fracturing her orbital bone.
This was the match to see on Survivor Series but we didn’t get it. I understood why Charlotte was put in The Man’s place. She was the next best choice… but she wasn’t The Man. Of course, I thought it could be a blessing in disguise because they could reserve the Ronda Rousey vs Becky Lynch event for Wrestlemania but it was a long shot. The WWE could have taken over Lynch’s new “The Man” character and warped it into something silly. It’s not like they haven’t done that before!
But through the miracle of miracles, the WWE didn’t really touch her too much. You can kind of see their fingerprints all over Becky Lynch’s “injury” and “suspension” in an attempt to make her this generation’s Stone Cold Steve Austin. In my opinion, it wasn’t necessary but I’m glad they didn’t do anything too drastic and Becky Lynch’s character has remained virtually unscathed. Once again, I’m going off topic. That’s how annoyed I am.
Anyway, months have passed after Survivor Series and Becky Lynch’s popularity is at an all time high. The time was ripe to book that one match we all wanted to see at Survivor Series and make it happen on Wrestlemania. Are we getting it? No! Because they’re including Charlotte as well! It seems so dumb to try to change something that would’ve already worked on it’s own. We all wanted to see a one-on-one match between The Baddest Woman on the Planet and The Man. But we’re not getting it thanks to the addition of The Queen.
But I can kind of see why Vince McMahon wants Charlotte to be in the match along with Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch: she’s the safety net. Ronda Rousey and Becky Lynch seem to be the two biggest draws of the WWE right now. I have the sneaking suspicion that WWE Creative is trying to play it safe and doesn’t want either of them to lose against the other as they’re scared that a loss could put a damper on their popularity. I bet Charlotte in there as someone who could either be the one pinned so neither Becky nor Rousey actually get the L or Charlotte sneaks in the win to throw a wrench into the dreams of the WWE Universe.
Even if that is the case, the WWE should’ve just allowed Becky Lynch vs Ronda Rousey to happen at Wrestlemania. Putting Charlotte puts a damper on the entire affair because, simply put, this isn’t the match the WWE Universe wanted to see. I’m not saying that the match will be awful and I’m sure Charlotte will add something to it to make it entertaining. The problem is that fans will always be asking “what if”? What if Charlotte didn’t do this? What if Becky Lynch didn’t do this to Charlotte? What if Ronda Rousey didn’t do that to The Queen? We’ll never get a definite answer because that’s going to be all speculation.
Will we eventually see Becky Lynch and Ronda Rousey go mano-a-mano without a third wheel? Possibly. But one thing’s for sure. It won’t happen in Wrestlemania… unless Becky Lynch injures Charlotte before the match starts.
Oooh! That would be cool! Make it happen, WWE! Make it happen!
Do you think adding Charlotte to the Ronda Rousey vs Becky Lynch was a good or bad decision? Let me know in the comments section below!
Oh, I agree. Becky vs. Ronda…the way it should be. Why muddy the waters so to speak.
They muddy the waters because the McMahons know what’s best for business.
