Burger Month is coming to a close and, honestly, I’m kind of sad. Burger Month affords me the chance to really explore the city to find new burger joints. And, for the final week, I actually found several restaurants which piqued my interest. Unfortunately, I could only pick one this week. It was actually kind of heartwrenching for me to pick but, ultimately, I chose the place that I thought would allow me to close out Burger Month on a high note. This week, I decided to try out CaliBurger.
There are a couple of reasons why I chose CaliBurger over the other potential burger joints as my final review for Burger Month. The biggest reason? It’s off the beaten path from my perspective. It’s located on the top floor of Century City Mall. I’ve only been there a couple of times and from my visits, I came to the conclusion that I don’t have any reason to visit Century City Mall. I mean, it’s nice and clean and all but all of the shops there are pretty much stores that I wouldn’t visit regularly. And if I did, they also have outlets in other malls and shopping centers closer to my location. Well, the only unique “shop” would be IHOP but that’s it.
But, since I will rarely even go to Century City Mall, that doesn’t mean I won’t go there. I will go there for a reason. And eating at Caliburger is a good enough reason as any!
I do have to say the place is rather fancy, though. Well, Century City Mall is a fancy looking mall so I guess CaliBurger’s facade as well as interior design is really… lavish, especially if you compare it to your typical McDonalds. No plastic stools and tables here, folks! They decked the place with some rather cushy chairs! It’s rather nice and a nice change of pace from your typical burger joint. It does make it look rather intimidating. Makes you feel like you need to dress up to eat here!
Like always, I perused the menu to find the most interesting item. Nothing really caught my eye as really “exciting.” That’s not a bad thing but I was rather disappointed, especially since I was expecting something more “Californian.” Though, in hindsight, I wouldn’t know how a “Californian” burger would differ from your regular burger. So I order the item that had bacon and cheese; I got CaliBurger’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger… because you can’t go wrong with a burger with bacon and cheese, right? And, instead of getting it with fries, I decided to switch to onion rings. I always prefer onion rings prefer than fries for some reason.
When I did get my order, I would say I was rather impressed by its appearance. Both the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger and the onion rings really looked good! They certainly didn’t scrimp on the lettuce, tomatoes and other extras on the burger. There was also a healthy dollop of BBQ sauce on top. Guess I wouldn’t need catsup to eat this burger!
The onion rings, while there weren’t a lot of them, looked fantastic! Most of the time, whenever I order onion rings, either they come out clumped together since they just dump them in the fryer without separating them. Or the breading doesn’t stick to the onions and the onions just slip out of the breading when you take a bite. Not with these onion rings! They were all separate and the breading stuck to the onions. And they tasted really good, too! Nice job!
But even if the onion rings were stellar, it wouldn’t matter if the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger sucked. I happy to say that the burger definitely didn’t suck! CaliBurger’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger tasted really good. It actually tasted and felt like a rather healthy burger thanks to the heaping portion of lettuce and other vegetables that they had. The lettuce was crisp and the tomatoes had some bite to them. The burger patty itself tasted good as well from what I could deduce.
However, I did have some difficulty actually getting the flavor of the meat patty. That’s because the BBQ sauce’s flavor was just so prominent. It’s not like they used a whole lot of BBQ sauce, though. And the sauce was really good as well. It was tangy and had just the right amount of sweetness to keep it from being too obnoxious. But there were some instances wherein it was all I tasted! In fact, I think it actually overwhelmed the bacon since I couldn’t remember tasting any bacon in my BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger.
I also do have some issue with how the bun was prepared; it wasn’t toasted enough. I do believe that toasting the bun makes the bread taste better as it gives it a slight crustiness that enhances the tenderness of the burger. It’s not a huge complaint but it was an issue. However, my biggest criticism of CaliBurger’s BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger it its size. I was expecting an American/Californian sized burger! It was rather puny.
All-in-all, I can’t say I didn’t like my BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger from CaliBurger. It was good for the most part and the onion rings were downright delicious. I wouldn’t call it a disappointment. Just rather underwhelming. I do think I could go back if I’m in the area. But I wouldn’t bother going through the trouble of actually travelling all the way there.
