I’ll Review Anything: McDonald’s McSpicy Chicken Sandwich

Okay, I have a confession to make. I actually ate the McDonald’s McSpicy around a month ago thinking I would put up a review of it here. But something stopped me from doing so and it really bothered me. It bothered me so much that I couldn’t bring myself to review it immediately.

It's a puzzle wrapped in a conundrum!

It’s a puzzle wrapped in a conundrum!

To fully understand what I meant, I guess I’ll have to tell you a bit of a story.

So, during the middle of July, I went to McDonalds and saw they were offering a new item. It was the aforementioned McSpicy sandwich. It’s a sandwich with a chicken patty coated in a spicy breading. Like the picture suggests, it also has a healthy amount of lettuce and mayo. Anyway, I ordered the McSpicy, fully anticipating it would just be a hot version of their traditional McChicken. I honestly thought that, if it didn’t taste like the McChicken, then that would already be a victory.

Well, while I was happy that it didn’t taste anything like the McChicken, so that’s a point in the McSpicy’s favor. In fact, I had to say it was good. The chicken patty was indeed hot (but not too hot to offend people that can’t take really spicy food). The breading had a good crunch to it. There was a lot of lettuce in the sandwich, which is good since it showed that they didn’t scrimp on extras. The mayo actually made sense since it can “cool” down the heat of the spiciness.

I love the fact it comes in a box. The top part can hold my fries!

But, the more I bit into the McSpicy, the more I felt there was something… off. I couldn’t put my finger on it. I mean, I already thought it was good. What more could I ask for? But when I got home to put the review, it was that “thing” that prevented me from writing it up since there was something odd about the McSpicy.

Anyway, today, I decided to take another crack at reviewing the McSpicy. I went to a different McDonalds (to get a different perspective and to check for consistency). This time I went to the McDonalds found in “New” Glorietta. I bit into my second McSpicy and my initial impressions came rushing back. Spicy? Check. Crispy coating? Check? Lots of lettuce? Check. That odd feeling that there’s something odd about the McSpicy? Check!

The box still contained my fries nicely.

The box still kept my fries in a neat pile.

I left McDonalds with the same nagging feeling. It’s like I ate the McSpicy before. Well, I did since this was my second time eating it… but that’s when it hit me! It tasted… familiar! It was familiar since I already ate something like it before. And as I exited the store, I looked at the fast food joint next to McDonalds… and that’s when I realized where I ate something like the McSpicy before.

Oh, look! Another place that serves chicken!

Oh, look! Another place that serves chicken!

Yes, the McSpicy tastes like KFC’s Zinger!

But I had to make sure. So, the next day, I went in to KFC and ordered myself a Zinger just to check if I was correct. And, yes, they do taste similar. Not exactly alike, mind you. But the flavors are remarkably the same.

I have to say that the McSpicy is definitely hotter than the Zinger. And McDonalds actually puts more lettuce than the sad patch of limp green leaves my Zinger had. But the overall taste of the Zinger was better. Maybe because KFC uses less breading and the chicken is bigger? Still, I’m hoping for KFC to retaliate and make an Extra Hot version of the Zinger!

Who needs a box when it comes with a plate?

Who needs a box when it comes with a plate?

So, if you’re afraid of the spiciness of the McSpicy, go ahead and order KFC’s Zinger. It’s pretty much the same thing.

Have you tried the McSpicy? What did you think of it? Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below.
