Hiya!

So last week I wrote down my experiences of playing Street Fighter and my disappointment of having to use Vega instead of a female character. But this feeling doesn’t seem to apply to male gamers. In fact, I know a lot of guys who actually intentionally create girl characters in their games! I always found it odd since I want to choose girl characters as much as possible since, until recently, there are very few girl heroes in video games. Another reason is, well, I’m a girl!

I decided to find out why some guys like to choose girl characters. In fact, I proposed this as sort of a term paper assignment for school (which I had difficulty getting approved because of its originality)! I used different sources like my friends. My friends said that they do it because girls look nice. Would you rather look at some burly dude while playing or some nice hot chick? Their words, not mine. One of them said that he did it because it’s more interesting because of the game. He mentioned Fallout 3 and some of the choices given to you are female only choices so it’s more fun to choose the girl ones.

I also went on the US server of PS Home and asked that question since I know a lot of the “girls” there are actually guys. When I found out that a boy uses a girl character, I would ask them why. The most common answer is it’s funny to troll people and see how big of a pervert most of them are. Since I get that a lot of times (PSN: robinadventures… shameless plug!), I didn’t think it’s THAT funny.

Turns out it’s not rocket science. Ultimately, the conclusion I got from all the answers I got is it’s a form of wish fulfillment; it’s not that these guys want to be girls in real life. Rather, like any video game, it’s a way to escape their real lives. They become forced to think how they would react like a girl to maintain the illusion that they really are girls.Or they just want to have a kick of pranking people. Turns out it’s not rocket science.

By the way, I got a grade of 90 for this!

I do think that playing that girl characters are more interesting that male characters and, next time, I’ll mention one specific game where this is so true. Hint: look at the first picture!
