Well, it’s nearly Halloween. And times are tough all over! Things are getting hectic so you may have put off the idea of getting a costume for the holiday. Or you may be a little strapped for cash so getting an elaborate costume for Halloween is out of the question. I understand all that. Which is why we over here have been putting out some last minute Halloween costume ideas for the past few years!
This list, however, will be a little different. Instead of just putting out five last-minute Halloween costume ideas, we’re putting out six! Three for boys and three for girls! While you can technically do a gender swap for all of them, I just needed an excuse to add one more to the official list.
Anyway, on with the list!
Boy #1: Linus Van Pelt from Peanuts
Oh, good grief!
A lot of the Peanuts gang would be very easy to cosplay. The only issue is you might have to do some explaining as most of them, besides maybe Charlie Brown, don’t have an iconic look. And dressing up as Charlie Brown would involve shaving your head bald. I’m not sure how dedicated you are to do that, especially for a last-minute costume. So, the easiest character to dress up from the Peanus gang would be Linus Van Pelt. That’s mostly because of what he always carries with him.
Dressing up as Linus Van Pelt would be relatively easy. If you have a plain red shirt, just draw some horizontal lines on it. Get some black shorts, red socks and loafers and you’re almost done. The pièce de résistance would be his iconic security blanket. This would be easy to duplicate as any large, light-blue cloth, something like even a beach towel, would be fine. All you now need to do is carry it with you, rub the security blanket on your cheek while you suck your thumb and, voila! You’re Linus Van Pelt from Peanuts!
Girl #1: Fran Fine from The Nanny
Great, now I have the theme song stuck in my head again.
Although she looks like her fashion sense got stuck in the ’80s and ’90s, Fran Fine from The Nanny does have a timeless look. She didn’t exactly have a super well-known outfit but it’s more of getting the attitude to pull off Fran Fine. In general, you have to look for stuff that’s mainly skintight. You might want to go for a more layered look. Try combining black, long-sleeved tops and then, on top of that, a very colorful vest. Fran usually wear colorful, tight miniskirts as well. Of course, very garish high-heels are going to be a must!
The only real issue I have with the costume would be the hair. Fran Fine is known for very big and poofy hair. That could be a bit of a challenge for some. You might want to see if you can get a wig or go to your local hairdresser for some help with this part. Even with this hiccup, the main thing to really complete the look is to act and sound like Fran Fine. If you can get the nasally voice down, you should be fine. Fran Fine, that is.
Boy #2: Jon Arbuckle from Garfield
How can he afford to feed Garfield on a cartoonist’s salary? (Yes, that’s actually Jon’s job.)
Jon Arbuckle is a pretty easy costume to put together. I don’t think you’ll have a difficult time getting the main stuff you need. Heck, the worst that could happen is you just have to borrow some clothes and return them after Halloween. Typically, Jon dresses up in a long-sleeved light-blue shirt and brown dress shoes. The pants could either be regular blue jeans or brown slacks. It all depends on which era you grew up in. That’s essentially it!
The problem is how do you get everyone who sees you know you’re Jon Arbuckle and not some normal guy. This is the thing that needs some work… but not a lot. All you’ll really need is a Garfield plushie and carry it around with you. I’m pretty sure that’s something you can buy pretty quickly without much trouble.
Girl #2: Yor Forger from Spy x Family
Not the Thorn Princess look, though. I’m talking about her “regular” outfit.
I actually debated whether to put Yor Forger or Anya Forger in this spot. Anya Forger’s outfit is also pretty easy to put together but I opted for Yor instead. I just think finding pink hair dye would be kind of bothersome. Anyway, Yor Forger’s casual outfit is pretty simple in itself. What you’d need is a red wool sweater, skintight leggings and white ankle boots to cover the main points.
The hair is where things can get a little tricky. But I’m generally confident all you’ll need to do to get Yor Forger’s iconic hairstyle is to tie most of it in a bun in the back. Then, leave two very long bunches of hair jutting out. Find a white headband to complete the look. You might want to carry around a couple of large knitting needles to hammer home the point. But, as this is her casual look, I don’t really think you’d need them.
Boy #3 Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury
OK!
Thanks to him being in other fighting games like Street Fighter 6 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, most video gamers, even though unfamiliar with the Fatal Fury franchise, know who Terry Bogard is. While he does sport a much cooler looking outfit nowadays, the better costume to pick for Halloween would still be his “classic” design. It’s just much more iconic. It’s also pretty easy to put together.
You’d need a red baseball cap, a sleeveless red vest (leather if possible), white T-shirt (with torn sleeves, obviously), blue jeans and red sneakers (Chuck All-Stars if you have them). Oh, don’t forget the fingerless gloves. That’s pretty much it! The outfit is so iconic you don’t even need long blonde hair tied in a ponytail to pull off the classic Terry Bogard look! Any gamers worth their salt will look at the get up and automatically thing, “Yep, that’s a Terry Bogard costume, alright.”
Girl #3: Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas
This might take a little glue and drawing skill… but it’s still generally easy!
This is a little bit different from the previous couple of girl entries as the dress is the most complicated part about Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas. Like the character herself, Sally’s dress is a mismatched patchwork of different pieces stitched together. Even so, you don’t really need any sewing skill to get a good facsimile of her dress. All you’d need is an old dress, a hodgepodge of loose cloth with different designs and either fabric glue or a stapler. I’d avoid the stapler as they can scrape your skin but it’s fine if you can’t find fabric glue. Just stick those various pieces of cloths onto that old dress and it’ll be fine.
The only thing left is to get those fake stitches on your skin to complete Sally’s patchwork look. There are pens specifically made to draw on skin. But, if you’re really cheap or you can’t find any, find a water based marker. Sure, you can use a Sharpie but, if you do, prepare to spend the next day scrubbing and exfoliating!
