I’ll Review Anything: Eenie Meanie (SPOILER FREE)

Fun fact: I am a low-key fan of Samara Weaving. Ever since I saw her in Ready or Not, I have been trying to find some of the other stuff she’s been in. The problem is it’s kind of hard to come by her movies here in the Philippines for some reason. I’ve looked for her other stuff where she plays the lead, such as Azrael, Borderline and The Valet, over all the streaming services here but they’re just nowhere to be found!

So, I was elated to see that Eenie Meanie, her latest project, show up on Disney+ here in the Philippines. Now, the problem is I might have built her up too much in my head and, after watching this, I might be in for a rude awakening. Undeterred, I sat down and watched Eenie Meanie in the hopes that Samara Weaving would be as good as I thought she was.

By the way, as Eenie Meanie was just released on Disney+, I will be putting up the mandatory SPOILER FREE note here. It may have popped up on your recommendations but, since there’s hardly any promotion for this movie, you may be wary if you should buckle up for this one. So, yeah. SPOILER FREE review for Eenie Meanie over here!

As mentioned, Eenie Meanie stars Samara Weaving as Edie Meanie/Eenie Meanie, a former getaway driver for a small mob outfit. When her ex-boyfriend John does something stupid to get him in the crosshairs of the mob, she reluctantly agrees to pull of one big heist involving a car filled with money that’s supposed to be the grand prize at a casino.

Now, as the biggest reason why I watched Eenie Meanie is because Samara Weaving is in it, I guess it’s only appropriate we start the review with her performance. I’m happy to report she does a really good job here! You can tell she’s really giving it her all here and she really does nail all of the necessary emotional beats as well as the swagger needed to play a getaway driver. I just wish she was in a bigger movie where more people can actually she how good of an actor she is.

Then again, the acting for all of the main players are pretty good as well. Sometimes, even too good! I say this because Karl Glusman, who plays John, Edie’s boyfriend, is just plain trash! He’s supposed to be this scumbag of a person who always does things without thinking and, well, Karl Glusman definitely manages to get that across because I just hated this character throughout! I do understand you’re kind of supposed to strongly dislike the guy because it showcases how abusive relationships work and why people stay in those kinds of relationships. But I still really hated the guy! Weirdly enough, that is a testament to how good of an actor he is. So, good on him?

Andy Garcia is also here and, guess what? He plays a mob boss named Nico. While this does play to his type, I cannot deny Andy Garcia pulled it off as he did come off a threatening enough while hiding behind a facade of niceness… like we’ve seen Andy Garcia do before. Like I said, it’s playing to his type.

The script is a little bit hit-or-miss. Early on, there are some really smartly written bits of dialogue and monologues that allow you to see a bit deeper into each of the characters. However, they kept on doing this even during the final moments of the film and those felt unnecessary and made it look like they were trying to extend the film’s runtime to its current length of 96 minutes. Honestly, they could’ve shaved off the last couple of monologues and it would’ve made the film snappier.

Another issue with the script actually has to do with the pacing. The first two-thirds of Eenie Meanie is actually pretty good. Things move along in a brisk pace and everything is moving along. But things really bog down during the last third of the movie bogs down as they slow things down to stuff it with seemingly emotional moments before we get to the climactic action scene near the end. I really wish they spread it out more since, because they decided to put it all in this short span of time, it just feels incredibly forced.

I also have some issues with the action scenes as, well, there aren’t that many here! There are only two car chase scenes but they are pretty long and are well choreographed. It’s nice to see them use actual cars instead of CGI. But because this is kind of billed as an action scene with lots of car action, just having two feels rather underwhelming. They’re also spaced out far from each other… and I already mentioned that thing about cramming all of the emotional stuff before the climax. So, you kind of wish there was another one to kind of add a little more spice.

All-in-all, I have to apologize to Samara Weaving because I can’t give a glowing review for Eenie Meanie. While she is really good in it and all the other actors pull their weight, there’s just not enough meat on the script or the action scenes to warrant a must watch. Couple that with the fact the last act comes off a very slow before we get to the big climactic car chase, I can’t say you have to go see this right this very moment. However, I will say it’s a good enough watch and, if you have a Disney+ account and you have nothing to see, I guess you can click on Eenie Meanie and give it a go.
