Hiya!
Recently, Capcom put out their Capcom Spotlight show focused on what they’ve got in the pipeline for both current and future projects. They showed off upcoming games like Pragmata and Resident Evil: Requiem. They devoted a whole lot of time to reveal all the DLC content for Monster Hunter Wilds that’s going to come out in a few months.
I will say they started out strong as they focused a good chunk of the Capcom Spotlight to Street Fighter 6. They showed off a bit of Sagat as he’s the next DLC character for Street Fighter 6. They also showed what’s in the next Fighting Pass, which I’m happy to report will include stuff like additional colors for the main cast and even new Challenger screens when you go online in Ranked and Casual matches.
However, the thing people are talking about are the new DLC Outfits for 7 of the roster. As it is the summer season in a lot of territories, Capcom essentially made these characters go to the beach and, well, it just so happens 5 of the 7 characters who will be getting these new outfits are females! So, you best be prepared to see a lot of Cammy, Chun-Li, Manon, Kimberly and AKI players sporting their best swimsuits when you face them online! Sure, you do get Luke and Jamie in their beachwear… but you all know more people will be getting these alternative outfits for characters of the female persuasion… even though they don’t even play as them.
These upcoming outfits has sent fans in a tizzy, including myself. I personally love these new outfits, mostly because, well, they are swimsuits! I personally think Cammy and Kimberly’s outfits look incredible. Shoutout to the added detail of giving Cammy tan lines! I also like Chun-Li’s one-piece swimsuit as it’s still pretty modest but still sexy and stylish. Manon’s outfit is fine but I feel it’s lacking something to make her look like the diva she is. I’m kind of weirded out by AKI’s beach attire as I question her top’s integrity of staying on if she decides to hit the water… or even if she moves around vigorously. As I’m an equal opportunity DLC outfit critic, besides his tattoos, Luke’s new outfit suits his overall vibe. Jamie’s just comes off as a little too basic, in my opinion, however.
While most fans are, shall we say, appreciative with these new upcoming DLC outfits, there is a contingent of alleged players who aren’t. Some are complaining how adding these sexy outfits is super unnecessary and it just makes the fighting game community look like “gooners.” In fact, there are people online calling this the “gooner costumes” instead of, you know, the summer swimwear outfits they’re supposed to be.
Here’s the thing: I don’t really understand why anyone would be offended by these new costumes. Okay, I get the principle as to why they’re “offended” by them. It’s because it kind of makes the entire fighting game community look like, well, gooners. I mean, just look at the reactions of the content creators when they saw Cammy in that pink bikini, Chun-Li in that gorgeous one-piece, Manon rocking that rather plain looking swimsuit, Kimberly confidently showing off her body in that tasteful sporty two-piece and AKI simply not caring if her top will fall off if she does any of her special moves. It is pretty much a “gooner” reaction.
However, just because it illicits a “gooner” reaction, that doesn’t make them “gooners.” They’re sexy outfits on sexy people! What kind of reaction would you expect? Look, I’m a female and I can appreciate these new outfits. Does that make me a “gooner” then? No. They look good! Are they saying I can’t like something sexy anymore? I mean, I got Juri‘s pajama outfit. I paid real money for that… and I don’t even play Juri! I got it because it looks sexy but cute at the same time! It’s just that good! I also got Dee Jay‘s glorious bedazzle suit… and I haven’t touched him in a looooong time! Side note: Capcom missed the boat by not including Juri in this Summer Swimwear pack.
I’m guessing it falls more on the impression on everyone is supposed to be “better than that” now. We’re supposed to be above all of this. My question is: why? Why are we supposed to be better and not crave looking at sexy people in sexy and stylish outfits? What, are we shaming people for liking this nowadays? Heck, is it even a good idea to be doing that as it, I don’t know, limits creative freedom from artists? Wouldn’t that be imposing social censorship? Now, I’m not against people going against these new sexy outfits. You do you and all that jazz. Everyone has the right to their own opinion. My opinion on all of this is, well, it’s fine.
For me, the only downside regarding these new outfits is Capcom is definitely going to be charging real money for them. No Drive Ticket purchases for you! I actually have the sneaking suspicion they’re going to be a little more expensive than the previous DLC outfits because, well, look at them! They’re so enticing and you know there are going to be more than just a few Street Fighter players who are going to buy them because… look at them!
If they’re too costly, then I may just get the Cammy or the Chun-Li outfits. I’ll pass on the Manon, Kimberly and AKI ones as well as the alternate outfits for Luke and Jamie. I just like what they did for Cammy and Chun-Li a lot and, like with Juri, I don’t even pick them that often! However, they just look so good!
That’s the thing, though. If you don’t like the outfits, then don’t buy them! In fact, Capcom made it possible so you can pick what outfit your opponent is using on your screen! Sure, you’d need to do that for every character. However, if you’re really that offended seeing Cammy ready to go to the beach, then just make it so you don’t see that when you’re playing against Cammy or the others who got swimsuits. Why stop others from being happy?
Byee!
