It’s nearly time for every video gamer’s favorite part of the summer! It’s nearly time for “Not-E3!” Yes, while E3 may be officially dead, the gaming industry has kept its spirit alive. This is especially true for Geoff Keighley who created Summer Game Fest when the industry needed it the most. And every year, Geoff Keighley has managed to get some really big name developers and publishers to share what’s coming down the line during Summer Game Fest.
Now, we are just a few days away from the actual show but they’ve already shown all of the companies Geoff Keighley managed to wrangle for the show for the livestream on Friday. As there is some time from now until then, I would like to make some predictions on what’s going to show up during the Summer Game Fest show. I may not be an industry insider but I can still make some intuitive guesses based on who partnered up with the show and what’s probably coming up on the horizon. So, let’s get to predicting!
#1 Capcom will reveal the Year 3 Character DLC lineup for Street Fighter 6
This is pretty much a no-brainer. With, Elena, the final character for Street Fighter 6’s Year 2 Character DLC, coming out a couple of days to coincide with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, it only makes sense for Capcom to start hyping people up for the next group of DLC roster additions. And the best way to keep the Street Fighter 6 hype train going is to show who going to show up next. I mean, they did the exact same thing last year. So it only makes sense to do it this year as well.
Now, I can’t say who Capcom has decided who will enter the Year 3 lineup as, after the surprise that was their Year 2 DLC roster, it could be anyone. Still, you know the fighting game community would lose their minds regardless of who’s going to be in.
#2 CD Projekt Red shows a launch date trailer for The Witcher Remake
Ahh! Be honest with me. You totally forgot CD Projekt Red was working on this, huh? Well, that’s kind of understandable as, when it comes to The Witcher series, most of us are looking forward to The Witcher IV as a stunning cinematic trailer was shown during last year’s Game Awards program.
But most of us have forgotten CD Projekt Red announced they were working on a remake of the first game way back in 2022! That’s already a whole three years already! Anyway, that should be enough time for the game to be in a ready enough state for it to get shown off at Summer Game Fest later on Friday. Heck, I actually think that’s more than enough time for them to reveal when the game is going to be released! So, yeah. I’m thinking they’ll show off the trailer as well as give us when it’ll be hitting store shelves.
#3 PlayStation Studios and Insomniac Games shows off Marvel’s Wolverine official gameplay
Way back in 2021, Sony had a PlayStation Showcase showing off a myriad of games and a very brief teaser for Marvel’s Wolverine. No gameplay. All they did show was Logan sitting in a bar, seemingly after a huge brawl. A guy gets up and takes out a knife, leading to him bringing out his claws. A very simple and effective teaser that got Marvel fans super excited.
Looking back, all of those games that were shown off during that PlayStation Showcase have been released yet… except for Marvel’s Wolverine! We haven’t even seen any gameplay of the game yet. Well, that is if you don’t consider all of the leaked footage that people have managed to get their hands on, that is. Well, I do think the game has been in development for long enough and it should be time for Insomniac Games to show an official gameplay trailer during Summer Game Fest.
#4 SEGA shows individual trailers for Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio
Who said SEGA is dead? Well, if it was, much like the main characters from Altered Beast, it will soon “rise from its grave” with a slew of nostalgic games! It all starts with the upcoming Shinobi: Art of Vengeance, which is coming out in a couple of months. However, that wasn’t the only classic franchise SEGA announced during The Game Awards in 2023. There was Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi! Well, we’re getting the new Shinobi at the tail end of August. The question is which of the other games will be next?
Well, based on the that very early teaser, it didn’t look like Golden Axe and Streets of Rage were close to being ready. But Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi? Well, they looks alright to me! So, I’m predicting SEGA will pull a one-two punch at Summer Game Fest and show off official trailers for both Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.
#5 Square Enix will close the show with a story trailer for Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 3
Every Summer Game Fest has to end with a big reveal to end on the highest of high notes. Right now, I can’t really think of anything that can be considered of that level other than Square Enix’s upcoming Final Fantasy VII Remake: Part 3. Although sales for the second installment, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, didn’t meet the company’s expectations, this is still going to be a Final Fantasy game and you know the gaming world will be excited to just get a first glimpse of what its going to look like.
While there are going to be some who might say it’s too soon for Square Enix to have anything ready to show by Summer Game Fest, I don’t think that’s the case. They’ve been working on Part 3 at around the same time they were finishing up Rebirth. It should also be much easier to develop the next installment since they aren’t doing anything extreme like switching from last gen to current get systems like with what happened for Final Fantasy VII Remake to Rebirth. It’s mostly going to be reusing the engine they used in Rebirth for whatever Part 3 will be titled. So, yeah, there’s more than enough time for a new trailer to be done by Summer Game Fest.
BONUS: More footage for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach
Well, this won’t be a surprise as they already reported that Hideo Kojima will be attending the Summer Game Fest proper despite getting an entire event later in the week dedicated to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. So, I guess they’re going to have a video at Summer Game Fest promoting the other show?
