I will freely admit that the most recent Sony State of Play was a case of quantity over quantity. While it did show that they had a lot of games lined up for the PlayStation 5 in the future, most of the game were pretty forgettable.
Still, this year’s first State of Play wasn’t a total borefest. There were a few games here and there which did show PlayStation 5 owners they had some thing to look for while they wait for, oh, I don’t know, Grand Theft Auto VI. In fact, there were five games that did make me take notice. However, some of these games weren’t exactly exclusive and they will be appearing on other systems. Even so, it’s nice that Sony did make these game available for the PlayStation 5 in the future.
So, let’s go check out five of the best games shown during the most recent Sony State of Play showcase.
Although I was more of a Nintendo kid growing up, I would still marvel at a lot of the games SEGA had in its library. In fact, I would head down my a rundown mall that allowed you to play SEGA Genesis games. I still have fond memories of playing exclusives such as Altered Beasts, Golden Axe and, of course, the original The Revenge of Shinobi. So, I’m really happy to see SEGA is continuing the series with SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance.
Right off the bat, I just have to say the game looks gorgeous! SEGA opted to use hand-drawn sprites and, as a fan of the original games, I really appreciate them going old-school for such a new game. The game also looks incredibly fast paced and a part of me wonders if my aging reflexes will be able to handle all that action. Hopefully, all that time testing my reaction times by playing Super Punch-Out!! recently will be enough!
Speaking of nostalgic games, I also loved the original Onimusha games when it came out way back when. I know it was a very popular series so I was kind of surprised Capcom stopped making new entries as it never left the PlayStation 2 console. Thankfully, that’s all about to change soon with Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
Capcom didn’t really show much with the trailer but it shows enough stuff to get me excited. I love how the new main character can interact with the environment. Neat little tricks, like lifting up the tatami mats to possible block attack and tossing enemies into things like torches, are nice and will spice up the usual hack and slash gameplay. Speaking of which, I do love those little snippets to the hero cutting through his enemies with such clean slices! Hopefully, Capcom will show much more of Onimush: Way of the Sword in the near future.
Both of the previous entries on this list were based on older content that I enjoyed in the past. This is obviously the best way to capture a longtime gamer’s attention. Simply show something attached to a property with some nostalgic value and you’re golden. The upcoming Tides of Annihilation is a totally new property so it’s so much more impressive how much it made an impact on me as well as other gamers when it showed up during the State of Play.
Tides of Annihilation is a stunningly beautiful game. While not much is known about the actual gameplay, there is a part of me that makes me think it was kind of inspired by Nier: Automata. And we all know how good that game turned out to be! The action looks incredibly fast paced and the platforming may be copying from games like the Uncharted franchise. And, like I said with Nier: Automata, we all know those games are fantastic as well! Here’s hoping we get to see more of this in the near future!
All of the previous games I’ve highlighted are all “serious” games. But sometimes, you just want some lighthearted fun. You just want to get away from all the dreariness of realism and want to play something much more cartoony. Well, the upcoming Darwin’s Paradox fit the bill for me!
In Darwin’s Paradox, you control the titular Darwin who just so happened to be an octopus who was scooped out of the ocean. He now has to use his intelligence and his various abilities, such as camouflage and squirting ink, in order to escape the industrial factory he was taken to and find his way back. The game does have a charm and does seem to be a really chill platformer with some puzzle and stealth based segments. Looks like a lot of fun, honestly. Hopefully, it’ll be a neat little budget title to play while we all wait for Grand Theft Auto VI.
#5 Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
Unfortunately, the last game on this list isn’t Grand Theft Auto VI. But, in my humble opinion, is almost just as good. I loved Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The one where they modified the camera so you can put it always behind Naked Snake, anyways. This was a game I dedicated a whole mess of hours into. I played it for so many hours that I could go through the entire game without killing a single enemy while collecting every single food item or getting any damage from the bosses in a single playthrough! That’s how dedicated I was to this game. So, of course I’m super hyped for the remake: Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater!
So far, the game looks great! Okay, the character models, such as the one for Ocelot, do have a kind of plastic-y look. But mostly everyone looks more than just fine. It’s also nice to see that Konami isn’t going to be messing with the script as it will be using the same voices from the original! Not the voice actors, mind you. The exact same recorded lines! Honestly, I can’t wait for this to drop in August!
