Episode 595: The Five Biggest Announcements from The Game Awards 2024

Hiya!

So, The Game Awards for 2024 has come and gone and, like with every year, Geoff Keighley used his connections and clout to get the most surprising announcements and newest trailers in gaming’s future. However, like with every Game Awards show, not every reveal gets the gaming world’s heart pumping with excitement. Some were received with a resounding “meh” and that’s fine. Even Geoff Keighley would have to round out some rather “meh” announcements here and there.

On the other hand, this year’s Game Awards did have some rather huge surprises and they did show off some games which did get a lot of people hyped. So, let’s go check out, in this gamer girl’s humble opinion, the five biggest reveals from this year’s Game Awards show!

#1 The Witcher 4

Looks like I wasn’t the only one floored by this trailer!

There was a lot to like about this trailer for CD Projekt Red‘s upcoming game. It’s an actual new entry to the Witcher video games. It shows us a more grown up and mature Ciri handling the Witcher duties this time around. It does appear they are going to be continuing their pattern of telling tales wherein the hero may try to do their best but will still have a sad outcome to the quest.

The only real issue I have with this trailer is it doesn’t really show any gameplay. That’s fine as this was the cinematic reveal for The Witcher 4. I’m not even sure if they’ve nailed down the gameplay mechanics yet but I’m sure the game will handle really good as the past games did. Still, it would have been neat if they did have some polished gameplay just so we would know what we were getting into.

#2 Okami sequel

Good things come to those who wait.

The original Okami took a bit of time to build a solid fanbase because, if my memory serves me correctly, didn’t sell all that well during its original run on the PlayStation 2. It was only after the game was ported to other systems, especially the ones which supported HD visuals, when the game started getting more recognition. Now that there are a ton more Okami fans, it only made sense for Capcom to greenlight a sequel.

Like with the Witcher 4 trailer, there wasn’t any gameplay shown for the Okami sequel. They didn’t even give it a proper name yet even! Still, Capcom seems to be putting in the effort as they brought back Hideki Kamiya, the original Okami’s director, to helm the sequel. So, hopefully, he can give the fanbase, which took him years to build, what they want.

#3 Elden Ring Nightreign

Welp, I guess I better start playing the original Elden Ring and making some friends.

There’s always been a part of me which dreads playing super hard games, which is why I’ve passed on playing a lot of FromSoftware games. Still, I know the games are good as, despite its difficulty, I got addicted to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. There is a super rewarding feeling of just beating that almost impossible boss after 26 tries so I get the appeal and I get why Elden Ring has garnered so many fans.

So, while I might not be on the Elden Ring train, I do understand why the announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign hit so big. Not only are you getting a new standalone Elden Ring adventure game but you can now play it with some friends! I do hope FromSoftware doesn’t make it so you can’t beat the bigger bosses if you’re not in a party as there are still going to be those introverts who wanna play it solo. Still, I’m happy for the Elden Ring crowd and I share their enthusiam.

#4 Onimusha: Way of the Sword

Well, it looks like Capcom is going back to the well once again… and that’s a good thing!

I do think it’s smart of Capcom to be diving straight into its deep pool of franchises and fishing out the products which gamers love. They probably need to make a small money bin just to contain all the money they made from the recent reissue of the Marvel vs. Capcom games. So, along with the return of Okami comes the return of the Onimusha series with a totally new entry.

Unlike the Okami sequel trailer, this new Onimusha game, subtitled The Way of the Sword, did give us glimpses of some gameplay, which I can appreciate. I did mention I love Sekiro so I do hope they make it more like that. I know the original games are more mindless hack and slash games. However, with the tastes of gamers trending towards ones with higher difficulty, maybe this is Capcom’s entry towards the Soulsborne game style? One can hope!

#5 New Virtua Fighter Project

Wait, why am I hyped for this? I’m not a Virtua Fighter stan?

Honestly, I can’t really explain why I would be excited for a new Virtua Fighter. I never really got into the older games in the series. I tried playing them and they were hard! It may look like other 3D fighters but there was something about how precise things controlled which made it seem difficult to play.

I guess it’s more of the idea of a new Virtua Fighter game. It’s been ages since the last game in the series, Virtua Fighter 5, came out. Sega is even re-releasing that version with some updates in the future. I know there are some hardcore fans for this legendary fighting game so I think I’m more happy for them than for me.

BONUS: Intergalactic: The Heretic Project

Who would’ve thought a new Naughty Dog game would have become so controversial? Well, many people did!

I thought the trailer was fine. It was nothing all that special. So, why is this a huge announcement, in my opinion? That’s because of how polarizing this game is going to be! So, I’m going to be examining Intergalatic: The Heretic Project to see what’s going to happen with it. Will it be an actual good game but bashed by a ton of regular people because of its perceived content and views? Will it be a terrible game heavily praised by traditional gaming outlets? We’ll just have to wait and see!
