Episode 589: WWE’s New Crown Jewel Titles Are Useless

Hiya!

So, WWE‘s latest Crown Jewel pay-per-view is done. I will be doing a review of the entire show but, for a quick preview on my opinion on the show, I didn’t really care for it. There wasn’t anything which made it stand out. That hasn’t stopped the WWE from attempting to make their trips to Saudi Arabia a big deal and I will applaud their most recent effort, the last King and Queen of the Ring tournament.

This time, however, I will have to give a big thumbs down to the WWE trying to elevate Crown Jewel. Yep, creating the “prestigious” Crown Jewel Men’s and Women’s Titles just feels totally useless.

Before I do explain why I think these new Crown Jewel titles are garbage, I guess I have to explain what the heck are the Crown Jewel titles first. In its simplest form, the major title holders from RAW and Smackdown had a match at the pay-per-view.

This pitted Liv Morgan and Nia Jax against each other as they were the Women’s Champions from their respective brands. Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER duked it out as well as they hold the Undisputed WWE Universal and World Heavyweight Championships. The winner of their matches would be crowned the new Crown Jewel champions as they would prove they were, not only the best of their brands, RAW and Smackdown, but they would be the best in the entire WWE.

Now, I will say, according to the kayfabe build of the Crown Jewel belts themselves, they aren’t anything to scoff at. Allegedly, the Crown Jewel belts were encrusted with 50-karat diamonds which, if true, would make it as or more valuable than the kayfabe value of the Million Dollar Belt the “Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase created.

So, I guess it would be nice to actually win something which would be super valuable, right? Well, it turns out this isn’t the case as the winners didn’t actually receive the 50-karat diamond encrusted belts! During the Crown Jewel Kickoff show, Triple H announced the winneres of their respective bouts will not get the expensive belts.

Instead, the winners will be getting a ring. A freaking ring! He then tried to hype up the ring by conjuring us visions of a time when someone will be wearing multiple Crown Jewel rings! That’s a lot of hooey as, if you’re the current Champion of RAW or Smackdown, do you even care about winning a ring? What’s worse is the belts are essentially showpieces and will remain in Saudi Arabia and not go home with the winners. What the winners will get to take home back will be a big ring. So, the belts themselves are useless. Boo!

My other issue with the Crown Jewel championships is how this will potentially derail storylines in the future. As the WWE plans this to be an annual event, this means, whenever Crown Jewel rolls around, the RAW and Smackdown Champions, both the Men and the Women Champions, will have to pivot from whatever feud they’re currently engaged with to focus on winning the Crown Jewel Championship.

We actually saw this recently with the lead up to the Women’s Crown Jewel Championship. Liv Morgan was embroiled in a feud with Rhea Ripley but hey! We have Crown Jewel coming up! We have to focus our attention on Nia Jax! So, let’s go the parking lot and beat the heck out of her with a baseball bat! I guess it was kind of a messed up serendipity regarding how Rhea Ripley was actually legit injured and she needed to get written off WWE programming to recover. Even so, this does look like a harbinger of things to come for future Crown Jewel pay-per-views.

Another thing I hate about the new Crown Jewel Championships is the fact that the WWE didn’t need to create them to book the Champions to fight each other! While I do agree with Triple H in the general sense that it is awesome to see the top guys and gals of RAW and Smackdown face off against each other, they didn’t need to reinvent the wheel because they could do it any time they wanted!

I mean, if you go through the WWE’s extensive history, you would see this isn’t really anything new. There’s Big E going against Roman Reigns during the 2021 Survivor Series as well as Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair on the same show! Heck, the WWE even put out a marathon of most of the Champion vs. Champion matches up on their YouTube channel! So, why would it be so important to create a new Crown Jewel championship to book a Champion vs. Champion match when the WWE has been booking them for years?

Now, I may be jumping the gun here. After all, Crown Jewel just ended so I can’t really say if the winners and the losers during the respective matches will have any impact in their future storylines. While the winners may not be taking home the Crown Jewel Championship belt, they can still have a lot of fun with the ring thing. I mean, it’s not like wrestlers haven’t used gigantic rings as weapons in the past, right?

The thing is, as of this moment, all of this effort in making these new championship belts feels like a desperate attempt to make Crown Jewel a bigger show than what it is. Honestly, I don’t see the point because all the WWE needs to concentrate on is putting on a great pay-per-view event! They didn’t need all the bells and whistles and, in this case, belts and rings to glam up Crown Jewel. All they needed to do was do Crown Jewel and put together a good show. That alone would make Crown Jewel feel necessary.

Byee!

What do you think of the Crown Jewel Championships as a concept? Was it necessary and will there be a payoff to it all? Let me know in the comments section below!
