Episode 484: Terry Bogard’s World Tour Mode in Street Fighter 6 is More Than Just OK

Hiya!

Well, Terry Bogard was added to Street Fighter 6‘s roster for a while now and it’s safe to say fighting game fans are very pleased with how he turned out. Capcom did a wonderful job of taking this SNK fighter and transferring his moveset into the world of Street Fighter. The problem with making the character so good is that it’s kind of hard to stop playing as the character. This is an issue as it does lead to some players ignoring the other stuff which came along when Capcom put out Terry Bogard in the game.

Not only did Capcom put an Arcade ladder for Terry but they also updated Street Fighter 6’s World Tour mode with an adventure revolving around your Avatar becoming Terry Bogard’s disciple! While this might not seem like anything new as Capcom always updated the World Tour mode when they added new characters to the roster, this update, specifically titled One Fateful Day, is more than just a simple update. It’s a goldmine if you’re a fan of SNK and its fighting games.

One Fateful Day is a totally new adventure pretty much cut off from the rest of the World Tour mode. In order to access it, you have to become Ryu‘s disciple first. Once you do, your Avatar will get a text message informing him or her about the upcoming Knock Out Festival, which you can only get to by going to your apartment and selecting the One Fateful Day event from there.

I would say this is the only real major disappointment with Terry Bogard’s World Tour story as having to access him in this manner makes him feel separated from the rest of the cast. In fact, once you do start with your One Faithful Day adventure, you’ll only have access to Beat Square in the Metro City proper. You will gain access to more locations, such as Metro City’s new Pao Pao Cafe (which you have to take a plane ride to get to for some reason). Even with the rest of Metro City being cordoned off, the update more than makes up for it with tons of content and SNK Easter Eggs.

When I say Capcom dropped a lot of SNK Easter Eggs, I seriously mean it! I may not be on the top when it comes to SNK lore but I did understand a lot of the references they snuck in. Things like the Neo Geo CD Loading Screen when you first enter One Fateful Day, the “we have Duck King at home” stand-in with Duck Queen and other SNK fighters and Lao, the guy who Rick Strowd beats up in the intro for Real Bout Fatal Fury 2, eats a Burning Knuckle from Terry this time around! I’m not an SNK fiend so I’m probably missing a ton more references but I’m sure some SNK nerd out there will be able to point them out!

The most surprising Easter Eggs aren’t exactly Easter Eggs as they kind of impact your Avatar. This would be the appearance of Joe Higashi and Blue Mary. No, I’m not talking about the Walmart versions you see in the trailers. I’m talking about the actual Joe Higashi and Blue Mary who actually show up in One Fateful Day. In order to meet them, you’ll need to level up your Terry skills a bit and then return to Beat Square. Once there, you’ll see Joe Higashi standing around and looking for a copycat. He assigns you to take a picture of him to see how much he’s copying. So, fly over to Pao Pao Cafe, take a pic of the fake Joe Higashi and go back.

After showing him the pic, Joe will notice someone infringing on Blue Mary’s copywrited signature look and tell you to talk to her as well! Yes, Blue Mary was there all along, looking at the clothing. She’ll then tell you to pick out an outfit for Joe because, well, he is basically walking around half naked. Fly back to Pao Pao Cafe and Joe will tell you to hand over the outfit to his impostor so no one will mistake them for himself. Talk to Joe one more time and he’ll give you a piece of paper informing you on how to do his patented Hurricane Upper, which you can add to the list of moves your Avatar can do!

Afterwards, level up your Terry fighting ability a bit more and then fly back to Beat Square. The food vendor will tell you there’s a lost dog and asks you to round him up. You’ll find the dog on top of the stairs and then… give him a plane ticket. Yep, the dog is smart enough to fly on his own! Afterwards, head back to Pao Pao Cafe and Blue Mary will be thankful for you finding Anton, the dog, and giving him the plane ticket. She’ll give you the Vertical Arrow technique, which you can also add to your Avatar’s repertoire!

I also have to point out that you can also learn a move from both Trasher and Rudra, two staples of Street Fighter 6’s World Tour mode. All you have to do is head to Beat Square while in One Fateful Day and then head to your apartment. Opt to leave at night and they’ll show up. To obtain their moves, they will request to be hit with one of Terry’s specials or supers. Oblige them and they’ll teach you one of their abilities. Pro Tip: none of them are particularly good. In fact, I have to say neither the Hurricane Upper nor the Vertical Arrow are that good as well. Maybe it’s because you only read how to use then and never really saw the real thing? Regardless, all of the extra special moves aren’t that great but it’s nice to have!

Finally, I have to say Terry Bogard’s segment in the World Tour mode is the most satisfying one as it ends with Terry wanting to face off against Ryu one last time. Terry figures out you’ve met Ryu before and asks you to face off against him using his fighting style. So, take the 14 hour flight to Japan and do just that. In reply, Ryu will ask you to fight Terry using his style. Take another 14 hour flight back to the Pao Pao Cafe and beat Terry while using Ryu’s techniques. After the battle, Terry will get the hankering to take on the real Ryu so the both of you hop on a plane for 14 hours to talk to Ryu.

After all of this flying, we get to see something magical. We see the face of Capcom’s fighting games meet up with SNK’s fighting game mascot. It’s a sight which made me oh so giddy for some reason. Before they duke it out, Terry asks you who you want to side with, him or Ryu. You then choose who to fight alongside during this match! While it does seem unfair and, in all honesty, I would’ve been happy enough to be a spectator of these two icons sparring, joining the battle is also fine. There are no hard feelings, though, and both Terry and Ryu part ways with a newfound respect for each other.

Capcom put a lot of effort into making Terry Bogard’s entry into the Street Fighter universe feel special and it definitely shows in One Fateful Day. The stunning number of Easter Eggs does show a lot of love for both Terry and SNK and I can’t help but smile from it all. Hopefully, they put as much effort as this when Mai Shiranui enters the fray in a few months!

Byee!
