Well, it’s safe to say Deadpool and Wolverine is a big hit. Even before getting the finalized box office results as I’m writing this over the weekend, unofficial results see the film raking in around $95 million in the United States alone. That’s a lot of cash for Marvel and Disney! And that’s not even counting the money they’ll be getting over the weekend! Suffice to say, Deadpool and Wolverine is a huge success and I’m betting most of you reading this have already seen it.
I thought Deadpool and Wolverine was a really good movie and I actually want to see it again. However, like with all movies I see, there are always going to be some niggling questions which would gnaw in the back of my head. These are never really important questions but they’re more of the silly and inconsequential questions that would pop into my brain. So, let me go ask just five of those questions right now!
Oh, and since most of these questions do deal with some specific plot points of the film, I’m putting up the SPOILER warning here! You have been warned!
On to the questions!
#1 How are the X-Men still alive if this happens after the events of Logan?
So, the central plot of Deadpool and Wolverine is Deadpool’s universe, which is essentially the 20th Century Fox‘s Marvel universe, is dying because their “anchor” character, Wolverine, died during the events of Logan. Okay, cool callback. But this does lead to a weird continuity problem as, in Logan, that world is devoid of mutants and the X-Men have disbanded.
So, if the X-Men and mutants aren’t supposed to exist in Logan, how come we can clearly see Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio during Deadpool/Wade Wilson’s birthday party? Logan is already dead and decomposing after saving X-23 and the other kids, right? So, if the events of Logan are accurate, shouldn’t they be unalive by this point of time?
Oh, and speaking of X-23…
#2 Why is X-23 in The Void?
So, after Deadpool finds “the worst Wolverine” in all of the multiverse, the duo get sent to The Void by Mr. Paradox, a rogue agent of the Time Variance Authority or the TVA for short. In their quest to escape The Void, Deadpool and Wolverine enlist the help of other Marvel superheroes trapped in the area, which include the aforementioned X-23, Elektra, Blade and Gambit. All of these heroes are from the 20th Century Fox line of Marvel movies so, once again, cool callback.
But why are the in The Void in the first place? From what I’ve gathered from the Loki television series, they only should be here because the TVA “pruned” their timelines out of existence. Now, I’m only assuming Elektra, Blade and Gambit are from Deadpool’s part of the multiverse so that may explain why they’re there. But why X-23? This is the same X-23 from Logan as she was saved by the “anchor” version of Deadpool’s universe. As she has no time manipulation powers which would make her a danger by the TVA’s standards, she has no reason for being sent to The Void by them. So, why is she there?
Oh, and speaking of “the worst Wolverine”…
#3 Why is “the worst Wolverine” walking out a free man?
So, it’s made very clear this isn’t the same Wolverine from the 20th Century Fox Marvel movies. He’s from an alternate universe where his inaction led to the death of the X-Men from his world. He then went on a murder spree, killing everyone in his path. In fact, this is the reason why he wears the yellow suit as it’s his only way of kind of honoring his fallen X-Men comrades. Although hesitant to join the other 20th Century Fox Marvel heroes in attacking Cassandra Nova‘s base, X-23 convinces him to do so.
But why is this version of Wolverine walking around his world a free man? Deadpool encounters him at a bar and not in prison, after all. After unaliving so many people, why is “the worst Wolverine” not incarcerated? What are the laws of that world where a multiple murderer is able to walk around a free man?
Oh, and speaking of the other 20th Century Fox Marvel heroes attack on Cassandra Nova’s base…
#4 How did X-23 survive Alioth‘s attack?
Deadpool and the rest of the heroes figure out that only Cassandra Nova is the only one who can take them out of the Void. So, the Deadpool, Wolverine, Elektra, Blade, Gambit and X-23 lay siege on Cassandra Nova’s base, with X-23 successfully getting Juggernaut‘s helmet to Deadpool to restrain her powers. Cassandra Nova opens a portal to Deadpool’s universe but it looks like the other 20th Century Fox heroes are done for as they’re left out in the open as Alioth engulfs them.
Oops. Sorry, I was wrong. X-23 survived the attack as she’s now settling down with the other Wolverine in Deadpool’s universe. So, how did she survive? I mean, during Alioth’s first appearance in the film, he totally annihilates everyone who was standing outside Cassandra Nova’s fortress. So, how did she make it out virtually unscathed?
Oh, speaking of Juggernaut’s helmet…
#5 Shouldn’t Juggernaut’s helmet just stop psychic attacks and not disable psychic powers?
So, Cassandra Nova stops Wolverine’s assault easily and even mentally tortures him. However, Deadpool, thanks to X-23 giving him Juggernaut’s helmet, stops her by putting on the helmet on her, nullifying her psychic abilities. But… wait. The Juggernaut’s helmet is supposed to shield the wearer from psychic attacks, not block their powers. This is the same for Magneto‘s helmet, which is why Professor X can’t use his powers on the Master of Magnetism and Juggernaut as well.
So, why would Deadpool forcing Cassandra Nova to wear Juggernaut’s helmet stop her from using her powers? I mean, it would’ve made sense if Deadpool put the helmet on Wolverine so he would be immune to her abilities, right?
BONUS: Where the heck is Weasel?
Look, I know there’s a lot of backstage politics when it comes to casting and I know the behind the scenes reason why the character didn’t show up in Deadpool and Wolverine… but I still gotta ask! Where the heck is Weasel?
Look, I am kind of happy Weasel’s absence allowed Peter to develop as Deadpool’s best friend as he was pretty hilarious as the clueless normal person trying to join X-Force in Deadpool 2. But there isn’t even an explanation of why Weasel isn’t a part of Deadpool’s life anymore! So, what happened to Weasel? I need to know!
BONUS 2: How come Disney+ in the Philippines doesn’t have Once Upon a Deadpool?
So, after watching Deadpool and Wolverine, I got the mad notion of watching Once Upon a Deadpool, the PG-13 version of Deadpool 2, with Fred Savage getting kidnapped by Deadpool and telling him a bedtime story by force.
Now, I’m not sure if this is true for the rest of the world but, as of this time, Once Upon a Deadpool is not available in Disney+ Philippines! Well, why the [bleep] not, Disney? I want my [bleep]ing PG-13 version of Deadpool 2!
