I’ll Review Anything: Deadpool and Wolverine (SPOILER FREE)

It’s been a while since Disney purchased 20th Century Fox and had the potential to fold in their superheroes back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But, despite a few cameos here and there, Disney and Marvel haven’t really done anything with them yet. That’s all changed now as Deadpool and Wolverine is finally out! And it’s R-Rated! This should be good, right? After all, Deadpool and Wolverine were the best Marvel characters to come out of 20th Century Fox’s use of the superheroes. And Deadpool and Wolverine/Logan movie studios and audiences showed that R-Rated superhero movies can be great, right? Nothing could go wrong, right?

Well, the only way to find out is to watch it, which I just did a few hours ago! So, let’s review this!

But before we do, I do have to mention that this will be a SPOILER FREE review. The movie hasn’t come out in a lot of Western territories as of this writing. As with previous SPOILER FREE reviews, this does make writing a synopsis a bit troubling, especially since the trailers have done an excellent job of not giving any concrete details regarding the film’s actual plot! So, yeah. This is just a reminder that this is going to be a SPOILER FREE review.

Anyway, if I were to try to give an overview of Deadpool and Wolverine, Deadpool needs to recruit the Wolverine from a different part of the multiverse to save his world from impending doom. That’s it. Honestly, do you need anything more? I mean, this is the team-up we’ve all dreamed! Heck, this could be a movie about the two of them going to eat shawarma and I bet you’d still be excited for it because it’s Deadpool and Wolverine in the same movie! So, I don’t need to bore you with the plot because, if the thought of the two characters in the same flick is pretty much all you need to know. Still, the overall plot is enough to keep you hooked on what’s happening in each scene. However, the third act was a letdown as it was pretty anti-climatic when you factor in the previous couple of acts.

I also will say that it does come off as somewhat choppy as there are times when our heroes would just be moving from place to place and they just so happen to meet the right people to move the plot along. It didn’t really affect my enjoyment of what’s happening as them coming across these folks are interesting will probably make you be like Captain America while you exclaim that you know that reference.

Then again, I don’t think we would be this excited for this live-action team up if it weren’t Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in their respective roles. They managed to breathe life into Deadpool and Wolverine before and they do it again here. Ryan Reynolds’ quick quips embody the spirit of the Merc with a Mouth and Hugh Jackman slipped right back into the claws of Wolverine so seamlessly, it’s like he never stopped playing the character. It certainly helps that their chemistry together is really good and I love their back and forth here.

However, despite Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman delivering really good performances, the scene stealer for me is Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova. I’ve never seen any of Emma Corrin’s other projects so I didn’t know what to expect from her but I was really impressed. There’s definitely a feeling of playful menace with how she did Cassandra Nova which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Remember when I mentioned how Disney and Marvel haven’t really been using the 20th Century Fox superheroes to their full potential? Well, it certainly seems like Deadpool and Wolverine is playing catch up as there is a smorgasbord of characters from those movies who appear in the film! I’m not saying who as there are a couple of trailers and commercials which to spoil those reveals. Thankfully, they are just the tip of the iceberg and I will say they all do a wonderful job with reprising their roles for the most part.

Most of the action scenes were pretty good as you do get a lot of bloody good R-Rated blood and guts spilling all over. The fight choreography was also well done and there’s even a long seamless tracking shot done in slow motion which was a blast to see. However, for some strange reason, the action sequence that sticks out in my head was the only real bad one as it was all shaky cam. This really felt out of place as the rest of them kept everything in frame while still following the action. In retrospect, I understand why they did this but, as this is a SPOILER FREE movie, I can’t say why. I do know you’ll know what I mean when you see it.

As Deadpool and Wolverine is still a Deadpool movie, you can still expect a lot of raunchy humor and fourth wall breaks. I did laugh out loud at a lot of the jokes but I can’t help but get the impression that Disney gave Ryan Reynolds and the writers some restrictions on how far they can go this time around. While still funny, it just doesn’t come off as “dirty” as the previous films in the franchise. It’s not a dealbreaker but it is kind of a downer if you were expecting something a little more filthy than what you get here.

Oh, I also do want to talk about the soundtrack as there are some songs that I didn’t expect to see in a movie like this. Then again, I must be kind of an idiot as Disney and Marvel already inserted Madonna‘s Like a Prayer in one of the earlier trailers. Even with this advanced knowledge, I was still surprised with some of the song choices they made as they do make perfect sense for a Deadpool movie. Honestly, I’m thinking of getting the soundtrack because it is pretty good.

Overall, I had a great time with Deadpool and Wolverine. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are great together and Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova is deliciously evil. While they did seem to tone down the more gross out humor this time around, probably because of Disney, I don’t think fans will be up in arms with this slight downgrade. I say give it a watch.
