Episode 469: Robin’s Five Picks for the Best Trailers Shown at Xbox Showcase 2024

Hiya!

Quantity over quality. That what I was expecting to call the theme of this year’s Xbox Showcase as the entire show was more than an hour of game trailer after game trailer after game trailer. I can’t say that because, in all honesty, Microsoft pulled out all the stops and got everyone to put their best foot forward and show off that the rumors of Xbox’s demise was all bogus.

That’s amazing because, while everyone else was there for the reveals of big titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Gear of War: E-Day, I was there for the other titles. This goes to show you how Microsoft had something for everyone, even the more casual gamer such as myself. So, let’s go through just 5 of the games which actually made me want to get an Xbox Game Pass and a decent gaming PC to play on. Yeah, sorry. I’m still not getting an Xbox Series X/S. I can’t really rationalize the purchase of on if all of these games are coming to PC.

Anyway, onto the games, in no particular order, by the way.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

I have a lot of fun memories watching my brother play the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater all those years ago. I do think the game has held up all these years but that’s not stopping me from wanting to play Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater for myself!

While this is not an Xbox exclusive and it will be coming out on the PlayStation 5 as well, I do have to applaud Microsoft for showcasing this game as it looks gorgeous! I’ve had my doubts about Konami dipping their toes back into the video gaming world but, if they can ensure both this and Silent Hill 2 Remake are going to be top notch games, I’ll be the first one to welcome them back with open arms.

Perfect Dark

I’ve never been a fan of first-person shooter games. I don’t hate them but I do think of them as repetitive most of the time as it’s mostly point and shoot. Also, if I don’t see the character, which is usually the case in these types of games, I can’t identify with them. What will reel me in, however, is if it has a good story like with what the Bioshock games had. Well, the trailer for the upcoming Perfect Dark did seem like it as well as add a good number of gameplay elements, like parkour and stealth, which aren’t usually in first-person shooters. Count me in!

I know there are previous Perfect Dark games but I’ve never played them. So I don’t know if it’s standard practice for Joanna Dark to get plunged into a mission and then might come out questioning if she’s actually fighting the real bad guy. That’s how the trailer came off to me anyways. So, color me intrigued!

Life is Strange: Double Exposure

Now this is a franchise I’ve actually played… but just the first one. I loved the first Life is Strange because I did identify with the main character, Max Caufield. I could see that from the first trailer. I never did play the other games in the series because, in all honesty, they came off as very pretentious. So, seeing Square Enix bring back Max Caufield with a new power and a new mystery to solve in Double Exposure, well, that news made me giddy with excitement!

I do think I’ll miss the time rewind power of the first game but the ability to switch between different alternate timelines looks cool as well. I also do hope they ditch the entire episodic gimmick and just release the entire game in one go. I know not many hardcore gamers are going to like this being on my list. Then again, this is my list!

Mixtape

While I was born right smack in the middle of the 90’s, I still consider myself a child of that decade. For some really strange reason, the instant I saw music groups like The Smashing Pumpkins and Devo, I knew I was going to play Mixtape one way or another. Heck, when I heard Roxy Music’s More Than This playing in the trailer, my mind was flooded with happy memories of my childhood. This is probably what the game is going to be going for and I’m all for it.

I will also say the trailer is ingenious as they even got a voiceover guy to make it sound like a movie trailer from the time period! The only thing which worries me is they didn’t really show off what the gameplay is like. Sure, there’s going to be skateboarding and stuff. I don’t get how floating in the sky will fit into all of this, though. Still, color me intrigued!

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle

Even if they were before my time, I still loved watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Oh, I do think Temple of Doom is fine but not as good as the ones I’ve mentioned. Still, that was leagues better than the other Indiana Jones we shall not name because they don’t exist. So, I’m really happy the upcoming Indiana Jones and The Great Circle manages to capture at least some of the magic of the original trilogy.

The only thing which bothers me is it’s a first-person shooter kind of game. Still, I already mentioned I can get over it if the story is good. Thankfully, that seems like that will be the case as there’s going to be this great mystery for Indy to uncover. By the way, this is the only Xbox exclusive game on this list! So, yeah. I better start saving up for a good PC!

Byee!
