Episode 518: The Three Best Exclusive Games Featured During the Xbox Games Showcase 2023

Hiya!

Let me tell you right off the bat I’m not an Xbox or PC gamer. I’m a PlayStation girl at heart. However, that’s never stopped me from looking over the fence and sigh wistfully whenever the other side gets a game I want to play but won’t get to unless I do take the plunge and get an Xbox or a good gaming PC. I’ve always been looking for a reason to get either one and, with Microsoft showing off the Xbox Games Showcase over the weekend, I’ve been looking for a specific game or games to convince me to switch sides, so to speak.

So, I watched the entire Xbox Games Showcase as well as Bethesda’s Starfield Direct. I did walk away with some fine impressions of some particular titles. Are these enough to get another video game console or upgrade my aging computer which cannot play today’s games? Well, let’s go check out the games which intrigued me before I make that decision.

I do got to clarify the games I’ve picked have to be labeled as exclusive to the Xbox and PC. So, despite Capcom’s Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess and Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth look stunning, they’ll likely be coming to PlayStation as well. I’ll also be counting the games down, with the most breathtaking game being mentioned last in this list. Okay? Let’s go with the list!

#3 Fable

Based on what I know about this game, I’m not really sure if I should be all that excited for this new entry.

I have heard of Fable but I’ve never played it. It does have a good following but the series has certainly fallen out of favor as the las full-fledged Fable game was released way back in 2010. Not to mention, the original studio who was making the games have closed down so another studio, Playground Games, who are mostly known for the Forza Motorsport series. Not only that, the trailer featured during the Xbox Games Showcase only showed in-game visuals and no real gameplay.

However, basing solely on the trailer, it does look like this new Fable might be worth a good solid look as it did have some striking humor. Additionally, as the trailer does use the game’s in-game graphics engine supposedly, it being able to render a giant taking a swipe at your character and not look too awkward does show it’s probably going to be a gorgeous game. Right now, I’m not willing to go whole hog on Fable but the Microsoft did pique my interest during the Xbox Games Showcase because of this conceptual trailer.

#2 Clockwork Revolution

Hey, this isn’t Bioshock! Someone should sue!

I started out my “gaming” career by not playing video games. I would play “easy” games like The Sims before as they were not so taxing to my reactions and I wouldn’t be throwing the controller at the screen when things got too overwhelming. However, I would watch my brother play a lot of video games and I would just backseat game instead. One of the games I loved watching my brother play was Bioshock Infinite. I just loved the steampunk aesthetic yet still be so bright and colorful. Well, it looks like the people behind Clockwork Revolution thought the same thing as the game’s art direction liberally borrowed for Bioshock Infinite’s look.

The overall look did make me take more than a second look at Clockwork Revolution, though. I do like the concept wherein you can manipulate time to remove hazards and, hopefully, use the time changing powers to do more, like slow down time for shooting, fast forwarding time on falling debris to attack opponents and those kinds of things. It also does look like Clockwork Revolution will have some semblance of a deep story so I’m all for that as well. However, we only did get to see snippets of gameplay so the game could be utter crap by the end. I’m still cautiously optimistic for this.

#1 Starfield

Was there any doubt which game would come out at the top? They almost dedicated a entire hour for Starfield! Then again, it looks like Bethesda’s new big game deserves it.

You thought Fallout and The Elder Scrolls were big games? Bethesda is trying to outdo the open world experience they themselves created with Starfield, which is more open worlds, with an “s” at the end. That’s because, in Starfield, you’ll be able to explore different planets and moons while still making practically every aspect of the game customisable to the player’s liking. Bethesda really went all out with how much your can personalize your character and style in Starfield. From skill trees, appearance, combat style and even your very own ship, players will be able to modify a lot of stuff to fit their own personal style.

Now, I’ve never really played Bethesda’s other games. I’ve never touched Fallout or The Elder Scrolls but I know you can do pretty much the same thing there. However, what sets Starfield apart from them and why I’m so interested in playing this is the setting. I do like sci-fi games where you do a lot of flying around in spaceships and exploring other planets. It gives me Mass Effect vibes in a way. I know Starfield is going to be much bigger and less focused on the main story but more on the player forging their own head canon. I’m all for that as well. Honestly, I’m incredibly excited for Bethesda’s new game and I want to play it in the future.

The question becomes “Do I actually then take the plunge and buy myself an Xbox Series X/S or a high end PC?” Honestly, I don’t think it’s worth it to get an Xbox Series X/S based on what I saw during the Xbox Games Showcase. Out of the 3 games which caught my attention, 2 of them, Fable and Clockwork Revolution, are more on a “wait and see” if they’re actually good. This leaves Starfield, which looks like it’ll deliver an amazing game experience.

It’s just that a single game, even one as epic as Starfield, isn’t enough for me to get an Xbox Series X/S. However, it did make me interested in getting a really good gaming PC in the future. While Starfield looks incredible, I know the modding community can add a whole lot more stuff to it. I can’t wait to see what crazy stuff they’ll be adding to Starfield and I would only be able to access the mods through PC. Besides, I do think it’s time for me to get a better computer now. What better excuse than one of the biggest games coming out in the near future?
