Well, it’s the last week for Burger Month and I will say I wish it had gone better. But life does tend to get in the way so I really couldn’t focus too much on it for a couple of week. Still, as this is going to be the last week of Burger Month, I had to end it with a bang. So why not do that by getting a burger from Bored and Hungry, which is supposed to be “America’s Best Burger”? Well, I haven’t really heard of Bored and Hungry before but I did some research and that’s what it’s supposed to be be? That’s a lot of hype to live up to so let’s see if they can meet that expectation, shall we?
Now, there is only one Bored and Hungry branch here in the Philippines and it would be found in the Power Plant Mall in Makati. They don’t have their own restaurant, per se. Rather, the Bored and Hungry branch works out in the food court area of the Power Plant Mall known as The Grid. If eating at a food court in a mall sounds like slumming it, well, it’s not as the Power Plant Mall is a pretty high end mall. As is a lot of upper crust types with money to burn love to go there. It’s very posh, to say the least.
Well, I did get to The Grid food court area and the Bored and Hungry stall was easy to spot. It’s not exactly prominent but, as one of the hooks of Bored and Hungry seems to be the use of those NFT monkeys as a branding tool, it’s hard to miss. Honestly, I don’t really care for the NFT gimmick. All I care about is if they have good burgers. I will say I do like their menu as they practically only have one item: The Bored OG Burger. The second menu item, if you can call it that is the Bored OG Burger Combo which comes with fries and a soda. That’s it! Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practiced ten thousand kicks once. But I fear the man who has practiced one kick ten thousand times.” Well, it looks like Bored and Hungry is following the adage as all they concentrate on is making one burger… so it has to be great, right?
Okay, so I did get the “second item” because, of course, I would want fries with my Bored OG Burger. One thing that really took me aback was how expensive it is. The Bored OG Burger Combo set me back 595 Php, which, if you convert to US dollars, is more than ten dollars! Or, if you prefer the Big Mac conversion, the Bored OG Burger Combo costs around 2-1/2 Big Mac with fries combos here in the Philippines! That’s a really hefty price for one burger! But, if it’s really good, it might just be worth the price.
After waiting for a while, I got my Bored OG Burger Combo. It turns out Bored and Hungry’s burgers are smashed burgers. We don’t really have smashed burgers here in the Philippines so this will be my first time actually trying one. I will say the act of squishing the burger into the griddle does add a lot of flavor to the burger. It may not seem like it does anything but, believe me, it does affect both the flavor and the texture of a burger, if I take the Bored OG Burger at face value as a smashed burger.
For one thing, really smushing the beef super thin makes the burger patty get these crunchy charred edges, which really impart a good amount of flavor to the burger. Thankfully, it seems like it’s general practice to add two smashed burger patties in a smashed burger or else it’ll just be a disappointment. There is a lot of beefy flavor from these two burger patties, which I loved. I honestly didn’t miss the juiciness as the delightful char more than makes up for it.
Essentially replacing the meaty juiciness for the Bored OG Burger is the sauce. Bored and Hungry’s Bored OG Burger does add a dollop of what I would say is a pleasantly tasting mayo based burger sauce. It’s not overpowering but mostly enhances the burger patties’ flavor profile. It does tend to get a little messy but, then again, every good burger has to be a little messy, right? I also love the addition of caramelized onions as it adds a nice sweetness to everything. Oh, and I can’t forget the nice American cheese slices that’s on top of each burger patty. I do love how nicely melted they were but I can’t help but think how good they would be if they melted just a little more so they dripped off the edges to slightly burn the cheese every so slightly.
I will say the only real downside, flavor-wise, of the Bored OG Burger is the burger bun. It’s just a plain old white bread burger bun, nothing more. It’s good that it’s thick enough to hold things together as it didn’t fall apart as I ate it. However, it just seems rather anti-climactic as everything else is next-level. I guess using a brioche bun or any kind of burger bun with flavor would come off as overkill. I just wanted something a little extra. At least throw some sesame seeds on top or something!
As I mentioned, I did get my Bored OG Burger with a side of fries and, yeah, they were good. They were nicely seasoned with salt all around. The only real issue I had were the bigger fries tended to get limp and soft after only a few minutes. They started out nice a crispy when I got my order. The smaller fries held up much better as they still had that crispy outside but the bigger ones sadly didn’t. A minor gaffe in my book but something to note down.
While Bored and Hungry’s Bored OG Burger Combo was really good, it’s not something I can wholeheartedly recommend to everyone because of its price point. I will say it’s an impressive burger and I really enjoyed it. But, like I said, you can buy 2-1/2 Big Mac Meals for the same price of Bored and Hungry’s Bored OG Burger Combo. That’s a lot of money, no matter how you cut it. But, if you really want to treat yourself to one of the best burgers out there, I say definitely go get one. This may not have been the best Burger Months I’ve had but it’s nice I’m closing it out with a fantastic burger like this.
