Episode 152: Why Roman Reigns Sucks

Hiya!

So, last week, I talked about my love for the WWE mega-event that is known as Wrestlemania. If you’re a wrestling fan, it’s probably the pinnacle and highlight of the year. This year, however, I can’t help feel a bit let down by it this year. Some matches, like the Intercontinental Ladder match surprised me with how good they were. Other matches, like the Dead Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar No Holds Barred Street Fight, definitely could’ve been much better.

However, there was one match that didn’t let me down and I got what I expected. That was the main event between Roman Reigns and Triple H for the WWE Heavyweight title. I wasn’t let down because I thought it was going to be one of the worst main events in Wrestlemania history. And I wasn’t wrong! The match stunk to holy heck! Even the highlight reel from the WWE’s own YouTube channel made it look boring!

Part of the problem is definitely the WWE is trying to push as their new “face,” Roman Reigns. Even since they positioned him to be the new main good guy of the company, Triple H have been trying to shove him down the fans throat. But why? Why does the leader of the Roman Empire suck so bad? I’ve been trying to figure that out for a while and, hopefully, by writing this entire thing, I can figure it out myself.

Roman Reigns didn’t always suck, in all honesty. There was a time when the guy looked like he could actually be a breakout star. When the SHIELD debuted with him along  with Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns looked really impressive. He was the muscle of the group and he actually could do a slew of impressive moves. He could also take a good hit here and there. Reigns was also the man who would clean house with some unique looking moves like the Superman punch. But maybe it was the entire SHIELD that made him look good?

Actually, I think the answer is both yes and no. The SHIELD were a well-oiled unit and even though they were bad guys, they were well liked because of the intensity of their attacks. Roman Reigns definitely helped bring up the intensity levels since, well, say what you will about his overall wrestling ability, he is a powerhouse. But, at the same time, I think Reigns needed SHIELD members Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins to help focus and make him follow a pace. Essentially, Roman Reigns feels like a guy who needs someone to direct him. So, when the SHIELD broke up and they went their separate ways, Roman Reigns looked lost.

Another issue I have with Roman Reigns is definitely his overall lack of personality. I know Seth Rollins had developed his own character and personality as I did watch him become the very first NXT World Champion and he has been wrestling for years even before he made it to NXT. And Dean Ambrose, while I never actually seen him wrestle before, has been wrestling in the independent circuit for a while. Roman Reigns, however, has only been wrestling for a total of 5-6 years!

Think about that! That means, prior to debuting in the main roster with The SHIELD, Roman Reigns has only been wrestling for 2 years! I don’t think that’s enough time to really become comfortable expressing himself as a person in the entertainment business that is the WWE! He still doesn’t know what works and what doesn’t work for him! Because of this lack of experience, I’m betting he’s only following instructions all the time, which is precisely why that original intensity we saw while he was part of the SHIELD dissipated when the team broke up. He doesn’t know how to actually be intense!

Also, he needs a lot of work with his mic skills. Fans tend to forget that wrestling is more than just the action inside the ring. But a lot of the reasons why we either love or hate a wrestler is how they actually talk. Honestly, sometimes, we don’t even care about the wrestling as long as the person’s mic skills are great! Oh, while it definitely helps to have incredible in-ring ethic, mic skills can take a wrestler a long way. I mean, The Rock wouldn’t be the success he is today if he didn’t have great mic skills! Heck, most people thought The Rock sucked when he was Rocky Miavia!

But it took The Rock time to get comfortable talking on the mic. Most wrestlers had to be get more experience talking to the millions and millions of WWE fans around the world without getting rattled. You may even notice veterans playing to the live audience, knowing when to listen to their chants and when to ignore them. Unfortunately, Roman Reigns can’t do that yet. He looks like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car every time he gets on the mic.

Look, I’m not even going to complain about his in-ring performances because, for what it is, it’s okay. I can believe he can pull off some upsets and he can certainly take a lot of good bumps. But I think the WWE is pushing Roman Reigns too fast. It’s too early for him to be champion right now. He’s too green and, while it seems like he’s earned the respect of the people backstage at WWE, he still has to earn the respect of what makes the WWE a huge phenomenon: the fans. Triple H and The Authority are always stating that what they do is “best for business.” I guess it makes great business sense to them to push a hardworking greenhorn that they can easily control like Roman Reigns. But they are ignoring what the fans want.

However, it would be incredibly easy for the WWE to salvage this problem: make Roman Reigns a bad guy. It would be relatively easy, too! Make him have a match with Dean Ambrose, easily one of the most popular wrestlers on the main roster today. During the match, Roman Reigns gets frustrated with being unable to pin Ambrose and eventually push things too far. Make him his several Superman punches even while Ambrose is clearly knocked out or something like that. The fans will boo Reigns… which is what they’re doing now anyway. That will actually give the fans what they want. I mean, they hate him already. Just make it official.

Well, while I’m on the topic of things I hate, I guess I’ll go tackling Anita Sarkeesian’s new video taking on video games. And, yes, it’s terrible once again.
