I’ll Review Anything: KFC Double Down

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Gee, wouldn’t it be swell if someone invented a sandwich that had no vegetables, and, instead of using bread, they used two pieces of chicken.” No? Well, you didn’t need to because the “geniuses” at KFC did just that when they masterminded the KFC Double Down.

Here’s the commercial that’s currently running in the Philippines, promoting it’s “son,” the Double Down Junior.

For the sake of this review, I decided to take on the “regular” version and not the puny, wimpy Junior version; a decision I sort of regretted. But I’ll get to that later.

For those who haven’t heard of what the KFC Double Down is, basically, it’s a bacon and cheese sandwich but encases them in between two chicken fillet sandwiches instead of in a bun. Now, before you scream that this is probably the worst idea out there; believe me, there are worse!

Need I say more?

Need I say more?

Anyway, I can forgive a lot, even a seemingly awful idea such as this if it tastes good. Even if the thought of just eating a blob of meat and salt may seem like a disgusting prospect for most, I actually love eating meat! So, bring it on!

Before I get into the review proper, I did a little research on the “sandwich” itself. The KFC Double Down isn’t what I’d call diet food by any stretch of the imagination. However, it’s not the monster everyone is claiming it to be. Yes, it weighs in at a whopping 540 calories. But that’s actually slightly lower than McDonald’s Big Mac (at 550 calories). Also, since there are no carbs, it’s harder to digest. Which results in it staying in the stomach much longer and staves of hunger pangs for longer.

However, this is definitely not a thing that you should eat everyday or even twice a day! The damned thing has 10 grams of saturated fat and 1,380 milligrams of sodium! If you do eat this thing, make sure to do some heavy exercise done before you even attempt to eat your next Double Down! But, all-in-all, the Double Down can be considered a way to lose weight since you don’t get hungry quickly… it’s just not the healthiest way to do it.

Science!

53 grams of protein? I’m in!

Anyway, who cares about the nutritional value of the sandwich! It doesn’t matter as long as it tastes good, right? So, I dropped by the closest KFC and ordered the KFC meal, which includes a side of fries and a soda; I got a diet Coke because… I like fooling myself into thinking I’m eating healthy with the “no calorie” drink.

Well, I wouldn’t call the Double Down the most appetizing thing to look at. Then again, what did I expect from two pieces of chicken encasing cheese and bacon? Also, when you see the paper wrapping around an item is slick with grease and fat, it isn’t the most beautiful thing… unless you’re into that kind of thing.¬†However, I do have a problem with the “integrity” of the sandwich; it was sliding around and difficult for me to retain its “sandwich” form. Also, the bacon wasn’t crispy. It was a limp piece of pork.

Still, it’s the taste of the thing that should matter, right? So, when I took my first bite of the Double Down, I would have to say it was pretty good! The initial saltiness did take me off guard a bit but it was just bursting with KFC deliciousness! However, that’s also part of the problem. The chicken simply overwhelms the bacon and cheese filling! If I didn’t know it was there, I wouldn’t be able to taste it.

Then, things started to go sideways. The more I ate the Double Down, the more I got sick of the flavor. There was just no subtleness and the intense flavor of the chicken keeps hitting your taste buds over and over again. It sort of just got tiring to taste the same powerful flavor every time! I guess that’s what you get when you don’t have any bread to spread out the “essence” of the meat. I think, if I didn’t have the fries to sort of balance it out, I would’ve gotten pretty sick of the Double Down halfway through.

Would I order the KFC Double Down again? Sure! It’s a pretty good sandwich! But it’s definitely not something I would get tomorrow after eating one! Maybe after a week… and after I go back to the gym. I hear that protein is great for building muscle…
