Even though I live in the Philippines, I’ve always been more of a sandwich guy. Yes, I’m aware of how it makes me seem like a douche since Filipinos should love rice. I guess I just love the convenience of being able to eat something on the go. Try eating rice while walking around and you’ll get the idea.
This is one of the main reasons why I love eating Subway sandwiches. They’re large sandwiches that you can eat pretty much anywhere. But, if you look at the actual fillings that Subway and most sandwich shops use, they are deli meats that you can get at your local supermarket. This means that, as long as you have the patience to shop for the ingredients, Subway sandwiches are nothing special.
That’s why I was pleasantly surprised with Quiznos’ list of signature sandwiches. The signature sandwiches that they offer requires more preparation and not really something that you can simply buy from the supermarket.
The sandwich that caught my eye was the Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. I’ve seen meatball subs ordered in a lot of foreign television shows so I took this as my opportunity to see what the fuss was all about. When I got my order (with a drink because… well, what’s a meal without a drink?), I saw a bottle of something called Four Pepper Chili Sauce so I got that as well, just in case.
I have to say that I really enjoyed the sandwich. The meatballs themselves were really good but I really wished that they were bigger and not the size that they came in. Tasty in their own way but it’s actually the sauce that elevated the entire meal. The marinara sauce had a hint of sourness to it. I don’t think that I really noticed it until I was half way done with the sandwich.
I guess I do have to mention that the Meatballs with Marinara Sauce sandwich isn’t something you want to eat if you want to eat healthy. Besides the marinara sauce, which has tomatoes, I guess, there isn’t a vegetable in the sandwich (Useless wiseass trivia: a tomato is really a fruit since it has seeds). So, if you want to eat a little bit healthier, go for the other choices.
I also tried it with the Four Pepper Chili Sauce. This is where I was disappointed. By the name itself, you would expect something hot. But… no. It tasted more like a mixture of barbecue sauce and ketchup were mixed together. Totally no heat and a total letdown.
Overall, I would go back to Quiznos and get the Meatballs in Marinara Sauce. In fact, I did! If you don’t mind it being something of a fattening sandwich, go ahead and order it. Just skip the Four Pepper Chili Sauce.
