Casting the All-New Female Ghostbusters

With all the news regarding both Marvel and DC revealing their movie lineups for the coming years, one piece of news fell off the radar. And it’s an announcement that a lot of geeks wanted to hear: they’re finally pushing through with a new Ghostbusters movie. This is a movie that no one really expected to be made, especially after Bill Murray saying he doesn’t want to do another Ghostbusters as well as Harold Ramis’ passing earlier in the year.

Then again, the new film isn’t going to be so much a sequel. Rather, it’s going to be a reboot of the series… because that’s always a good idea.

What? You can't say "creep" on a poster?

This post is proof positive. And, yes, I am being sarcastic.

I do understand why they’re rebooting the entire thing. After all, when they announced the new Ghostbusters film, they also mentioned one important nugget of information: the new Ghostbusters team is going to be an all-female team! I actually kind of like it as it does turn the normal convention of having the women being afraid of the ghosts and making them the ones to actually catch them is smart. Also, there are a lot of really funny female comedians that can take the reins from their male counterparts.

Of course, the question becomes, who will be cast as the Ghostbusters of this generation? Well, like I said, there are a lot of qualified actresses for the role and everyone’s going to have their “dream team,” so to speak. And since this is my editorial (it’s the category name after all), here’s my ideal cast for the new Ghostbusters film!

Melissa McCarthy as their new accountant (Louis Tully)

For most people, I’m guessing she’d be a shoe-in for one of the actual Ghostbusters and not just a supporting cast member. I’d rather see her as the Louis Tully analogue instead. It may seem like an odd choice, considering her comedic timing and, you know, actually headlining some comedy films in the past. But, no, in my eyes, she’d be better in the film if she wasn’t part of the Ghostbusters. At least not initially.

Yep, not as a Ghostbuster.

Yep, not as a Ghostbuster.

Remember the party scene in the original film? Where he hosted a party yet no one gave him any respect? That was brilliant and I wouldn’t want to see any other actress handle this kind of acting but Melissa McCarty. Besides, like in its sequel, it’s totally possible to make the character an honorary Ghostbuster.

Aubrey Plaza as the new Ghostbusters’ secretary (Janine Melnitz)

This may seem like an odd choice, choosing deadpan comedianne Aubrey Plaza to play the extremely nasally sounding Janine Melnitz. Then again, I’m not looking for a 1-to-1 exact re-imaging for this remake. And I think Aubrey Plaza would make a great modern version of Janine.

Her traditional death stare.

Death stare!

Most of the cast I’ve picked are really known for displaying a lot of emotion and craziness. I needed someone to sort of balance out all of the zaniness that all of the characters will be displaying and Aubrey Plaza would be the best person for the job. Also, I’ve always felt Janine was severely underutilized in the films and I feel the same thing’s gonna happen in the remake. I’m essentially giving Aubrey Plaza the role as she does have the ability to steal every scene she’s in, making a small role into something memorable.

Alison Brie as the new gal in the team (Winston Zedmore)

Winston Zedmore only appeared during the latter half of the original Ghostbusters movie as they needed more help busting all those ghosts. I wouldn’t want to only the lovely Alison Brie late in the film! I want them to introduce the character from the start of the film. Make her an intern trying to get college credit or something. Just get her in the suit as early as possible!

"Annie's pretty young. We try not to sexualize her."

“Annie’s pretty young. We try not to sexualize her.”

I’ve always liked the Annie character from Community (when is Season 6 coming out, anyway?). So I’d just transfer Alison Brie’s character over to Ghostbusters and we’re done!

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the brainy paranomal scientists (Egon Spengler and Ray Stanz, respectively)

For Egon and Ray, I wanted to have two comedians that have great chemistry together. And when it comes to female comedians with great chemistry, you can’t go wrong with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Best. Female. Comedy. Duo. Ever.

Best. Female. Comedy. Duo. Ever.

Actually, the only issue I had with casting Tina and Amy was who was playing who. Ultimately, I went with giving Tina Fey the role of Egon and Amy Poehler the role of Ray. Tina is just a little better at playing the “straight man” (which is the more logical Egon) and Amy does a better job as the wacky sidekick (the more excitable Ray). I don’t really mind if they switch roles but I would mind if these two comedic geniuses won’t be in the film!

Emma Stone as the sarcastic and whimsical Ghostbuster (Peter Venkman)

This was the hardest role to cast. Initially, I thought of other great female comedians like Maya Rudolph and Kirsten Wiig. I also tried to think of the box and have someone like Karen Gillan and Mila Kunis. But none of them seemed right for the role of Peter Venkman. Then I read the cast list Bill Murray (the original Peter Venkman) gave and his choice of Emma Stone actually made sense. So I’m going with his choice as well!

Hottest Peter Venkman ever

Excellent choice, Bill Murray!

She’s a very good actress and she’s very charming, which is one of the most important requirements to be the new Peter Venkman! Not only that, she’s a pretty funny gal in real life! I’m not sure about her improv skills, though. But as long as you give her a solid script, I’m pretty confident Emma Stone can pull it off.

Well, that’s it. That’s my cast for the new all-female Ghostbusters! In all honestly, Hollywood could cast anyone they like for the roles…

….just as long as they have Tina Fey and Amy Poehler in it.

Who do you want in the new Ghostbusters reboot? Do you agree with my list? Or do you have some other people in mind? Leave your thoughts and ideas in the comments section below!
