Transformers I Want To See Join The Masterpiece Figure Line (Decepticon Edition)

If you look at the Takara Masterpiece lineup right now, you’ll notice there’s a severe lack of the Autobots enemies, the Decepticons. Right now, the only Decepticons that are on the list are Soundwave and his tapes (Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and Ratbat), Starscream and the other seekers (Thundercracker, Skywarp, Acid Rain and Sunstorm) and the incredibly oversized and out-of-scale MP-05 Megatron.

It may seem like there’s a lot of them because of Soundwave’s tape collection and the Seekers. But the Laserbeak, Buzzsaw, Ravage, Rumble, Frenzy and Ratbat (the tapes) figures are small; Rumble and Frenzy are even shorter than the Spike/Daniel Masterpiece extra figure that came with Bumblebee!. And the Seekers are just recolors of Masterpiece Starscream… both versions of Masterpiece Starscream! So, this time, I’d like to compile a list of Decepticons that I’d like Taraka to make Masterpiece figures of!

Blitzwing

One of my favorite toys as a kid, Blitzwing was an all-around awesome action figure!

Hell yeah!

Triple Changer = Triple the fun!

What made Blitzwing an awesome toy is because it’s a Triple Changer. Not only was it a (somewhat janky looking) robot, it could turn into a tank and a jet; two other badass toys! Although I only had the knockoff version of Blitzwing (it was green not purple like the official version), I didn’t care because it was just an excellent toy.

Unfortunately, after an extended playthough, Blitzwing couldn’t stand anymore because his feet (essentially the jet’s rudders) became so loose. In all honesty, I didn’t really care that much for Blitzwing’s robot mode because of how awful it looked. Both his tank and jet modes are fantastic, though.

If they do make a Masterpiece Blitzwing, I hope Takara improves its robot mode. Then again, that shouldn’t be too hard to do.

A better Megatron

Don’t we already have a Masterpiece Megatron?

Just look at that robot mode. Yeesh!

Just look at that robot mode. Yeesh!

Yes, there is an MP-05 Masterpiece Megatron figure already but it’s a Masterpiece figure that definitely needs to by updated for a myriad of reasons. For one, after MP-10 Optimus Prime (a really fantastic figure, by the way), Takara made a concerted effort to ensure that the rest of their Masterpiece figures would follow a certain scale, as in they would be appropriately sized like they were in the cartoons. Unfortunately, MP-05 has a humongous robot mode! He towers over MP-10 and makes him stick out like a sore thumb. Also, Megatron robot mode is hands down has the ugliest robot mode in the Masterpiece line! His legs are just too scrawny.

But the worst sin Masterpiece Megatron is the number of accessories available to him. Even the updated Gold version doesn’t come with the extended barrel and the stock which are important to have if you really want to get a cartoon accurate Megatron. You still need to get the accessories pack separately, which sucks big time!

I don’t think they’ll ever make a new Masterpiece Megatron because it’ll be hard to circumnavigate all of the new toy gun laws… but one can dream, right?

Galvatron

If we can’t get a new Masterpiece Megatron, how about his new incarnation then?

Press his "belt buckle" for a surprise!

Press his “belt buckle” for a surprise!

Some people have classified Galvatron as a Triple Changer and they would be right in the very strictest sense of the word since he does have three modes. Those would be his robot, tank/gun turret and “gun” modes. But since he never transformed into a gun throughout the cartoon run, I tend to disregard it. Besides, all you need for Masterpiece Galvatron would be both his robot and tank/gun turret modes.

I actually think it would be a challenge for Takara if they attempted to make a Masterpiece Galvatron because his cartoon design was so good! And I would buy one in a heartbeat!

Insecticons

Is it cheating if I want all three Insecticons become a part of the Masterpiece line?

Pure G1 goodness right here!

Pure G1 goodness right here!

The Insecticons were probably the weirdest sub-group in the Transformers universe for the simple reason that there were so many of them! Most of them are clones of the original trio (Shrapnel, Bombshell and Kickback). I actually thought they were more menacing than the “regular” Decepticons since they seemed more like a force of nature, focusing more on eating the world’s energy resources rather than taking over the world.

But why would I choose this trio over more popular teams, like the Constructicons or the Dinobots? Well, because they’re the only team that would be reasonably sized enough to be released as the first Masterpiece figures set! Unlike the Constructicons or Dinobots, you’d probably have to buy them individually. But the Insecticons could be made small enough (they’re just a bit taller than Bumblebee in the cartoons if I remember correctly) so they could easily be a three-pack!

Shockwave

You can’t have too many gun Decepticons on this list, apparently.

What's that sticking out of his crotch?

What’s that sticking out of his crotch?

Last but not the least is Shockwave, the Decepticon that was left behind in Cybertron to handle things while the rest left to party on Earth. Yep, the tone of his voice does make him sound like a party pooper! I had a knockoff Shockwave as a kid. It was colored green like my knockoff Blitzwing, which makes me wonder why the makers of these unofficial toys love the color green.

This was another toy that I loved but I really couldn’t stand the placement of his trigger while in robot mode. It makes him look like he has an errection! And I had a hard time putting it out of my mind even when he was in gun mode. Also, I didn’t like the fact that you had to attach something at the end of his gun barrel. If they make a Masterpiece version of Shockwave, I hope they address these two issues.

What other Decepticons would you like to see join the Taraka’s Masterpiece series? Let me know in the comments section below.
