It probably comes to no surprise to the people that know me that I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan. I’m probably not the biggest (I’m a bigger Paramore fan than Taylor Swift), but I do enjoy a lot of her songs. I grew up listening to her hits like “Love Story,” “You Belong with Me” and “The Story of Us.” I guess I liked those songs because of the… naivety and melodramatic romanticism of growing up. The lyrics had a lot of feeling and meaning behind them.
Sooooo… what does a fan like me think of Shake It Off, Taylor Swift’s new song? Well… it’s good and bad at the same time. Just read on and I’ll explain in detail!
First, the good stuff. The tune itself is fun to listen to. It’s incredibly bouncy and has a happy tone! My only big issue I have with Shake It Off’s pop tune is it doesn’t really sound like any of the Taylor Swift songs I’m used to. It’s totally different from her signature country pop ditties she’s famous for. It’s not a bad thing at all, though. It’s just very different and I actually didn’t know it was a Taylor Swift song when I first heard it.
The music video is also hilarious! Shake It Off’s music video has Taylor Swift try out different personas like a cheerleader, hip hop dancer, ballerina and more and utterly failing at all of them. Then it comes full circle with Taylor just trying to be herself and totally rocking it out. I actually love how out of place she was, how bad her dance moves are and how dorky and uncoordinated all her moves were! It’s always fun to see your favorite star make fun of themselves and this is no exception.
While I do have a fun time with Shake It Off listening to it, God, I hate the lyrics. The lyrics are just awful! From what I understand, Shake It Off is all about how Taylor Swift has a lot of haters and she just ignores them. The song’s meaning just is terrible, especially when you compare it to her earlier works. While I could identify with songs like “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Breathe” and, to a lesser extent, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” and “I Knew You Were Trouble,” I can’t identify with Shake It Off.
Also, they lyrics themselves are just… bad! I love the older Taylor Swift songs because they had soul and meaning! They always told a story. “Love Story” was about her overprotective father not letting her date. “You Belong To Me” was about seeing your crush with a girl who doesn’t appreciate him. There was a good tale to be told. With Shake It Off, Taylor Swift is just saying she has haters and she’s ignoring them. BORING!
The rap part just isn’t Taylor Swift. It encroaches on a totally different territory that belongs to Iggy Azelea and Ke$ha! It’s a direction that Taylor Swift shouldn’t go to… ever! And the rap isn’t any good! It would’ve been much better if you had someone else do it… like Iggy Azelea and Ke$ha. I guess the point of the rap segment was to show that Taylor Swift can rap (which she can’t) or that it wouldn’t fit her style (which I could’ve told you).
Overall, I still enjoy Shake It Off for its incredibly bouncy and happy pop song sound. I know if the lyrics were better and if they just cut out the rap part, I would enjoy the song a whole lot more.
