Well, it looks like Spider-Man: Brand New Day is also heralding a bright future for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s been a while since the fanbase has been this excited for a new Marvel movie and this excitement is earned because, like my partner on this website said, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is indeed very good.

But, just like with a lot of all of the previous superhero movies I’ve seen, I do have some questions. And, like before, these questions aren’t really big major plot holes that wreck the movie. These are just the smaller questions my brain picked up on that, in the grand scheme of things, are very inconsequential. Even so, I do feel I have to ask them even if they don’t really mean much. So, here are just five inconsequential questions I have after watching Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Of course, since I will be discussing specific moments and plot points, there will be a lot of SPOILERS here. You have been warned!

#1 How does Peter Parker earn money?

At the very start of the movie, we see Peter move into a new apartment to be even more secluded from the world. It used to be a storage unit but he managed to really make it his own, filling it with some really slick computer setup, complete with an artificial AI, EV. He’s also hooked everything up to EV so that it can handle a lot of the mundane and complex stuff when it comes to fighting crime. And when he’s not fighting crime, Peter Parker buys a bunch of flowers for Aunt May‘s grave.

But how the heck does Peter Parker afford all of this? Okay, flowers aren’t all that expensive but his computer setup must cost Peter a bundle! And how much is rent and utilities in New York when you don’t have any roommates? I’m not even including some of the stuff he needs, like components for web fluid as well as the parts for his web grenades. Also, I know a good protein powder can be a little pricey, which Jean Grey specifically mentions to see while she’s walking around Peter’s apartment. I’m not even including the little, unimportant things like, you know, food?

We never see Peter at work or doing a job throughout the entire film’s run. So, how does Peter Parker to do make money? Does he have something like a GoFundMe account using Spider-Man’s name? Does he do a lot of freelance work or deliver pizzas like another version of Peter Parker did? How does Peter make his money to afford living in New York?

#2 How did Jean Grey keep Spider-Man alive after getting shot?

At the end of the film, Spider-Man takes a bullet meant for Jean Grey to save her life. The Punisher/Frank Castle manages to take the severely injured Spider-Man to a hospital where they give him the medical care to heal. But it turns out Spider-Man’s wound was much more lethal than expected and it was Jean Grey, who was using her powers to keep Spider-Man alive until the doctors did their thing a Peter recovered.

But how did she do that? I understand that, after she realized what happened to her sister, Jean Grey’s abilities became more powerful and she became powerful enough to freeze people in their tracks. But how would that allow Spider-Man to stay alive after getting shot? Did she use her powers to prevent Spider-Man from bleeding out until he The Punisher got him to the hospital? Does her psionic freezing of people also suspend their life force of the person affected? I wish they explained it a little more just so I could understand what happened.

#3 Why did Damage Control build those sliding solid walls in Jean Grey’s “prison”?

After Jean Grey is captured after her assault on Damage Control’s headquarters using The Hulk/Bruce Banner as a weapon, she is imprisoned in a seemingly nondescript room, equipped with wood paneled walls, a simple bed and very normal looking furniture. It turns out the room is actually all a ruse as, once the head of Damage Control leaves the room, the “wood panel walls” retract, revealing Jean Grey is actually encased in a glass room, akin to how Magneto was imprisoned in the X-Men movies.

So, I have to ask why Damage Control would even have those sliding wood wall panels around the prison? Did they just have some extra wood lying around and they thought, “Well, it seems like a waste of some perfectly good constructions materials”? Is it for the prisoner’s privacy? I mean, if you’re keeping the person as a prisoner, especially one you know can be dangerous, I don’t think you would want to give them any sense of privacy, right? That wouldn’t be a safe idea! So, why have them in the first place?

#4 What happened to The Hulk after the assault on Damage Control?

Spider-Man and The Punisher arrive at Damage Control headquarters building to take on Jean Grey and a mind-controlled Hulk. Both of them are eventually subdued by Spider-Man. Jean Grey is turned over to Damage Control and Bruce Banner, despite being in control of his Hulk alter-ego for years, he has to be taken away by doctors and other personnel for either imprisonment or treatment.

But who exactly were these people? And where did these people take The Hulk? We just hear over a news broadcast that The Hulk was taken away but they never explain by who, where and what purpose. I guess he could be taken to The Raft as it is a prison for Marvel’s superpowered beings. Or he could be taken for medical assistance by the doctors as The Hulk did fall from a building and then turned back to Bruce Banner, meaning the meek human would be badly injured and need to go to the hospital. But as it was never mentioned what happened to him, I have to ask.

#5 Why doesn’t Black Widow/Yelena Belova have her offices in New Avengers headquarters?

At the start of the film, Spider-Man asks Yelena Belova, a member of the New Avengers, for assistance regarding who could have helped Scorpion escape Damage Control’s prison. In order to have a face-to-face with her, Spider-Man has to visit a Turkish bathhouse as that’s apparently where Yelena has her “offices.” Yelena doesn’t really have an idea but she does tell Spider-Man that there have already been four other attacks on other Damage Control facilities while they both bathe.

But why would Yelena Belova hold meetings in a Turkish bath and not the New Avengers headquarters as seen in the ending of the Thunderbolts/New Avengers movie? I know they give an excuse that, as this is a Turkish bath, everyone there has to be in their skivvies so there wouldn’t be a way to hide weapons. But wouldn’t they have have high tech weapon scanners in New Avengers HQ? Besides, in a world where superpowered beings are a dime-a-dozen in a place like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, how would screening for weapons be all that useful?

Honestly, the best explanation is this was just an excuse so that Brand New Day can have a scene where we get to see Tom Holland and Florence Pugh in a hint of nudity. Fanservice, am I right?

BONUS: How can the Spidey Tracker track Spider-Man in space?

If I may frank, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has probably the most useless after credits scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, in the film, Ned Leeds creates the Spidey Tracker app. It essentially collects submissions from users who have seen Spider-Man and this can be used to find out where the Wall Crawler is at any given time.

Now, in this very slap-dash after-credits scene, the Spidey Tracer leaves the planet and notes that Spider-Man is somewhere in space. Now, that’ll probably happen in Avengers: Doomsday at one point, no doubt. But how the heck would someone report Spider-Man is there out in space? For one, the person reporting it would have to be aware of the app and have it on their… whatever this alien race have apps on. Okay, fine. They could report it using the website. But still, as the Spidey Tracer uses the planet’s geolocation systems that are only tracking locations on Earth, then they wouldn’t be able to pick a spot in space, would they? I mean, are you saying Ned Leeds created a way to track objects out in space? If that’s the case, hire that man for NASA already!
