Episode 670: Who Wore Street Fighter 6’s DriveTech Wear Best and Worst

Hiya!

So, Street Fighter 6 fans have been begging and pleading with Capcom to give us more costumes for the roster. Right now, some characters, like Chun-Li and Zangief, already have a 4th costume available. Most, however, still have to be gifted more than 3. Well, that was the case until around a few weeks ago as Capcom did give a new costume for each and every character in the roster!

The only problem is everyone got the same costume! Each character in Street Fighter 6 now has a new alternate outfit called DriveTech Wear. Essentially, DriveTech Wear is just an alternative costume where everyone wears the same sports jersey, shorts and leggings. I believe the point is so, when there are team tournaments, each team can easily be identified as either the Blue or the Red team. Oh, they’re all free. So, while I don’t think I’ll be using the DriveTech Wear because I think they generally look… generic, at least I didn’t have to pay for it.

Even though I’m not going to be draping my characters in DriveTech Wear, I did at least try them on every character in Street Fighter 6 just to see who looks good in them. After around an hour or so, I did kind of put together a list of who wore the DriveTech Wear well and those who didn’t. I thought it would be fun to just post my thoughts on them. I do have some criteria with my picks. For the best, the character has to look good in both the Blue and Red versions of the DriveTech Wear. If they only look good in Red or vice versa, they can’t make the list. For the worst, they simply don’t look good in either color. Pretty simple, huh?

So, here are the 3 characters who look really good in DriveTech Wear and the 3 characters who don’t!

Best #3: Luke

This himbo looks pretty good in the skintight wear. Luke already has a generally sporty look to him thanks so having him all clad in sportswear just works really well. I also do like how the backwards baseball cap also works well with the look. Also, his regular fighting gloves do provide a nice accent to the overall look. In the Blue version, the glove match nicely with the yellow highlights in the costume. In the Red version, they provide a nice contrast to the bright red and while color scheme.

Still doesn’t skip forearm day!

However, the thing that makes it work for me is that Luke still shows off his oversized forearms. Some character actually have skintight sleeves in their DriveTech Wear outfit. Capcom wisely didn’t do that with Luke and still allowed him to bear his forearms.

Worst #3: JP

I honestly don’t think there was a way to make JP look good in a sports costume. He’s an older looking gentleman so it already kind of looks weird for him to try to look “sporty.” He also carries a cane and it just looks strange to see someone carrying something which is designed to help them walk wearing athletic gear. I actually tried thinking of sports equipment Capcom could have tried to replace the cane with but everything I came up with, such as a baseball bat or a golf club, wouldn’t mesh well with his movelist. So, there wasn’t really anything they could do here.

Can you imagine JP carrying a baseball bat? I can’t!

However, I do believe Capcom did JP dirty because they still had him wear his cape while wearing the DriveTech Wear! The cane, I get. It’s essential to JP’s gameplay. The cape isn’t! So, why have him wear it? JP already looks silly in the sporty outfit but they chose to make him also look out of touch because he thinks the cape would look cool with this ensemble!

Best #2: Mai

It always seems like Capcom always puts a lot of extra effort into Mai’s costumes. That really shouldn’t be the case here as she’s supposed to be dressing up in what everyone else is wearing. Still, Mai just looks stunning in the DriveTech Wear costume! Despite it covering up a couple of things which makes her a popular character, Mai still looks sexy in the generally skintight jersey, shorts and leggings. It honestly does look like something she would wear when going for a jog.

My, my, Mai!

There is one particular keeping Mai from the top spot. I do wish Capcom also changed the color of her fans when draped in the Blue version as keeping it red makes it look out of place. If the fans were colored Blue to match the outfit, it would be perfect but that’s just a minor quibble when compared to how good she looks in both Blue and Red.

Worst #2: M. Bison

Remember how I said how ridiculous JP looks because he still wears his cape while dressed in DriveTech Wear? Well, I have pretty much the same issue with M. Bison’s DriveTech Wear outfits! First, M. Bison is one of the rare instances where Capcom decided to use his Outfit 2 as the base model for the DriveTech Wear costume. While it does make sense as, if they used his default costume, M. Bison would be wearing that raggedy rag on his head while wearing the clean and pressed sports jersey. However, picking M. Bison’s Outfit 2 as the base opens up another set of problems because of all the accessories!

Wearing all of that is definitely a choice!

First off, M. Bison still has his shoulder plates on and it doesn’t make sense! The shoulder plates of his Outfit 2 is supposed to make him look like a general or something along those lines! Making him wear the shoulder plates while in DriveTech Wear makes him look like a 6-year old boy because he thinks he looks cool in them! Capcom should have also made him ditch the forearm bracers. They already gave him long sleeves so why cover those up with the bracers? Finally, his hat while in the Red version of DriveTech Wear is gray! Why? He already has a red hat as a default! Why not keep it red?

Best #1: C. Viper

I don’t like C. Viper. I hate fighting against her, especially when she’s controlled by someone using Modern controls because her heavy auto-combo can be easily abused. I hate how complex she plays and how you have to be really quick on the buttons to do her more damaging combos. However, I will acknowledge C. Viper definitely looks really good in the DriveTech Wear.

Still as techy as ever

There’s a lot to like about how Capcom put together C. Viper’s look in DriveTech Wear as it isn’t a quick costume dump. Some care was actually put into designing her in the costume. For one, this version is actually a combination of both her Outfit 1 and Outfit 2 models. Her hair comes from Outfit 1 but her eyewear is from Outfit 2. None of the other characters mix and match the outfits! The combination just works well with the DriveTech Wear with her big hair being a nice highlight and the eyewear matching the sporty look. The red hair amazingly works well with both the Blue and Red versions, with it matching her outfit when she’s draped in scarlet but adding an amazing contrast while she’s wearing blue.

Worst #1: Dhalsim

Honestly, I don’t think there was any way Capcom could make Dhalsim look palatable while wearing the DriveTech Wear outfit. The main reason is Dhalsim isn’t exactly the sporty looking type. He’s always looked like a mellow dude, choosing to either go out without a shirt or dress in very loose clothing. Seeing him in a skintight jersey just doesn’t fit Dhalsim’s vibe at all.

Not exactly the best outfit to do yoga in.

However, the thing which really irks me with Dhalsim’s DriveTech Wear look are his leggings. We all know Dhalsim’s main gimmick is he can stretch his limbs out to impossible lengths. Well, it seems like those leggings are super stretchy as they are able to elongate as far as Dhalsim can! I know Street Fighter 6 is a fantastical game where people throw out balls of energy and teleport and such. Even so, seeing a garment stretch that far without breaking just feels like a dip in the uncanny valley for me!

Byee!
