Episode 517: Street Fighter 6’s Deluxe and Ultimate Edition is Ultimately Disappointing Right Now

Hiya!

It hasn’t been a week since Street Fighter 6 was released and Capcom is already reporting it has sold over 1 million copies of the game. Gaming news sites are also reporting Street Fighter 6 hit a huge landmark as it became the fighting game with the most concurrent number of players on PC when it was released. It’s also been making a killing in the reviews department as Street Fighter 6 has hit near universal acclaim from reviewers everywhere. Even people who aren’t hardcore fighting game fanatics are saying Street Fighter 6 is well worth the money because of how much content is in the barebones package.

However, Capcom, like most other video game publishers, made different bundles available for Street Fighter 6. You have the Standard Edition, which is just the feature rich, normal version of Street Fighter 6. Besides that, there are also 2 other packages. There’s the Deluxe Edition of the game and the Ultimate Edition. Ooh, there are enhanced bundles? Shouldn’t everyone be going for that as it’ll have more stuff to play around with? I mean, isn’t that the normal practice for these additional packages?

Well, I say you have to read the fine print because, in my honest opinion, both the Deluxe and the Ultimate Editions come off as a little weak. In fact, I have to say I’m very disappointed with Capcom for allowing this weaksauce Deluxe Edition and Ultimate Edition packages to be greenlit in the first place.

Why do I say this? It simply boils down to the fine print because, apparently, Capcom’s idea of what Deluxe and Ultimate Editions mean is just that they mostly include future DLC and not stuff you can use right now!

Let’s break down what the Deluxe and the Ultimate Editions include in their packages first. The Deluxe Edition includes the base Street Fighter 6, the first batch of DLC characters, which will be AKI, Rashid, Ed and Akuma, additional color schemes for these new characters and 4,200 Drive Tickets. The Ultimate Edition, on the other hand, includes the base Street Fighter 6 game, the aforementioned upcoming DLC characters, 2 new costumes for all of those future DLC characters as well as more colors for those new outfits, 2 new stages yet to be announced and 7,700 Drive Tickets.

These packages may sound enticing, especially the Ultimate Edition as they do seem to include a lot of new stuff. However, what you’re actually getting is the promise of new stuff. Yeah, if you really read the fine print, what you’re doing is pre-purchasing future DLC. Now, I’m pretty sure Capcom will push through with their promise as they’ve already put up a roadmap as to when all of this is going to be released. My issue is we’re not getting much additional content right now!

You would think Capcom would have included more stuff in either the Deluxe Edition or, more especially, the Ultimate Edition, such as additional costumes and colors for the starting roster. For the additional colors for the base roster, you can unlock them by either buying them using Fighter Coins and Drive Tickets. We’ll talk about Fighter Coins a bit later but what I want to focus on are the Drive Tickets.

You do get some if you buy either the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions of Street Fighter 6. So, you can get some additional colors if you use them to purchase these extra colors. The problem is each color bundle per character will cost you 1,000 Drive Tickets! This means, even with the Ultimate Edition, you won’t be able to unlock all colors for the starting 18 characters you have. If you want more Drive Tickets, you better be willing to play the game each and every day to get those daily and weekly challenges Capcom will be dropping in Street Fighter 6.

For the secondary costumes, I am happy to report there are 2 ways to unlock them. The first way is by buying them using Fighter Coins. What are Fighter Coins? Well, that’s Street Fighter 6’s microtransaction currency and you can only get them by purchasing them with real money! Unlike Drive Tickets, there’s no other way to earn them for free, sadly. There is a way to unlock them for free but that would involve you trudging through the World Tour mode and increasing your Bond level with each and every character to maximum to unlock them. That seems like a lot of time and effort not being put into doing the actual 1-on-1 fighting, which is the reason why Street Fighter 6 is so popular. If you’re willing to spend hours running around and grinding in World Tour with your beautiful or freakish looking monster of an avatar, more power to you.

These isn’t a big issue in the grand scheme of things. I don’t believe Capcom will welch on their promise and these new characters will be made available eventually. That’s the problem, however. The reward for spending the additional cash will come eventually, not now. This does downplay the feeling that the Deluxe and Ultimate editions of Street Fighter 6 are special because, as of right now, they aren’t anything special as you’re not getting anything special at this moment!

However, if you do get either of these “special editions” of Street Fighter 6, I do believe you will be rewarded for your diligence as, when the new characters and stages do start trickling out down the line, fans who would want to get these extra bits of content will be kicking themselves for not buying the Deluxe and Ultimate Editions as early as possible and will have to shell out more money to either get the DLC character packages or even buying each new item individually.

Well, I’m sorry, Capcom, but I’m probably one of the idiots who’ll be kicking myself in the future because I’d rather spend the extra cash in the future than spend more right now. It’s the Standard package for me, I guess.

Byee!
