Well, suffice to say James Gunn‘s Superman is a big hit. The writer/director/comic book fanboy managed to put a lot of fan’s minds at ease as his “soft reboot” of DC‘s superhero movie franchise seems to be doing well critically and financially. For the most part, I can say I really liked it but I didn’t quite love it. Still, I do think it’s worth making the trek over to your nearest cinema to see Superman.
Although James Gunn did a really good job with the film, there were several questions that popped into my head. As with what I usually do with these superhero films, I love to nitpick on the more unimportant questions that do bubble up to the surface of my consciousness. So, let’s go take a look at just five of these inconsequential questions I have coming out of Superman.
Oh, as all of these inconsequential questions involve me revealing big plot points, I will be putting out the SPOILER WARNING now. You have been warned.
#1 How did the Engineer fix the video file when the Kryptonian robots couldn’t?
In this version of the character, the Engineer is a nanobot enhanced soldier under the employ of Lex Luthor. Early in the movie, Luthor, along with the Engineer and Ultraman, break into Superman‘s Fortress of Solitude and stumble across the broken recording of Kal-El’s parents that was included in the rocket that sent him to Earth. The Engineer manages to access the computers, download and repairs the corrupted video, revealing the complete message.
But how was the Engineer able to fix the video? I mean, sure, she’s essentially a walking computer as she has full control over the nanotechnology in her body. But are you saying the tech Lex Luthor put in her is more advanced than the Kryptonian technology that sees interstellar travel as practically nothing, can build intelligent robots and can build entire structures out of crystals? This does seem like a weird disconnect to me.
Speaking of interstellar travel…
#2 How does Supergirl travel to other planets with a red sun?
So, in a surprise cameo at the very end of the movie, Supergirl, Superman’s cousin, has returned from space to get her dog, Krypto. This kind of explains why Krypto likes to play rough and why Lois Lane is surprised to find out Superman has a dog. That’s because the dog isn’t his; it’s Supergirl’s. Anyway, it’s explained, since Supergirl is Kryptonian, she’s unable to get drunk at parties on Earth. So, she prefers to go to populated planets that have red suns so she can get sloshed, so to speak.
But how does Supergirl travel to these planets? I mean, if she goes to a planet that has a red sun, she would lose all of her powers and wouldn’t be able to fly, let alone escape that solar system. I guess that would mean she has a functioning spaceship. Either that or she has some kind of dimensional breaking device like what Lex Luthor and his allies use to “boom tube” from place to place. If it is a ship, then is this the same ship she used to get to Earth? If it’s like Lex Luthor’s “boom tube” thingies, shouldn’t Superman also be familiar with the tech then?
Speaking of Lex Luthor’s surprising stuff…
#3 Where did Lex Luthor get the growing kaiju?
Lex Luthor needed a way to distract Superman while he was breaking into the Fortress of Solitude. So, the night before, Lex orders his henchmen to release a tiny creature because, apparently, the thing grows overnight. By noon the next day, the little thing has grown to the size of a building and starts wrecking havoc in Metropolis. It becomes so much a problem that the “Justice Gang” (not their official name) involves themselves in the proceedings.
But where exactly did Lex Luthor get the teeny tiny kaiju? I guess one of the eggheads in his company would have the know-how to genetically engineer a creature like this. However, I’m not sure why they would do that in the first place. It also seems plausible the creature was actually taken from the “pocket universe” as well. But I don’t think it’s really explained. Anyway…
Speaking of the Justice Gang…
#4 How come the Justice Gang only come out once in a while?
The Justice Gang seen in the majority of the movie is a group of three “metahumans,” which include Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific. I put the word metahumans in quotes because I’m not quite sure if they are. I mean, Guy Gardner doesn’t have any powers besides owning a ring that can create physical light constructs of anything he can will into existence. Mister Terrific might be a metahuman but he could also just be really, really, really smart. Hawkgirl might be the only metahuman as she does seem to have enhanced strength. Still, despite them being superheroes, they’re pretty much humans like Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen.
But even though they are superheroes, how come they don’t really come out that often? Sure, they help Superman with the kaiju fight. But where were they when the Hammer of Boravia (really Ultraman doing some Marvel‘s Juggernaut cosplay) was beating up on Superman and wrecking havoc on Metropolis? I guess, technically, they don’t have to go on every emergency since they are funded by Maxwell Lord‘s company, they are a private entity with a boss. Still, you would think someone destroying a city would be enough to bring them to action, right?
Speaking of Jimmy Olsen…
#5 Why the heck does Jimmy Olsen got game?
After the aforementioned fight against the Hammer of Boravia, Clark Kent returns to the Daily Planet where he talks with Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen about the fight. It’s hinted that the girls in the newsroom are infatuated with Jimmy Olsen. Yes, this Jimmy Olsen. Apparently, Jimmy Olsen here is so attractive, he managed to get Eve Teschmacher to betray Lex Luthor because she wants to hang out with Jimmy for one whole weekend. Yes, this Jimmy Olsen.
But why does this Jimmy Olsen have so many women fawning over him? Wait a minute… maybe he’s a metahuman and that’s his power? I mean, that’s the only explanation I can think of that makes a modicum on sense!
BONUS: Did Superman… just kill a few people in the movie?
Remember how much guff we gave Zack Snyder for Man of Steel as his version of Superman outright killed someone (General Zod) and didn’t seem to care if civilians were in the line of fire during his battles?
A lot of the outrage was because of Superman’s long-standing moral code of not killing anyone. Well, am I wrong in thinking James Gunn’s Superman actually did kill a few people in the movie? In the film, Lex Luthor has an elite squad of armored troops and, when Superman is trying to escape with Metamorpho and Krypto from the pocket universe he was imprisoned in, the soldiers go after them. The fight eventually leads them in a “proton river” and Superman takes most of them out… by killing them?
I mean, it’s not really confirmed what happened to them but, considering that Mister Terrific says the proton river is super dangerous and Superman dunks a couple of Lex’s troops in it… did Superman just kill some people? Sure, they were working for a bad guy. But does that mean they were bad?
I really have to know, James Gunn!
