Episode 601: Character Suggestions for Street Fighter 6’s Season 3

Hiya!

Well, Mai Shiranui has bee out for a while now. That means Street Fighter 6‘s Season 2 is almost done, with Elena being the only one left. This does mean Capcom is already hard at work at developing who’s going to be worked into Street Fighter 6’s roster for Season 3. They have probably finalized the next 4 characters for the near future but I do still think it would be fun to put on our thinking caps on and “suggest” who’s going be coming out for the foreseeable future.

However, this won’t be a wishlist of who I would want to see Capcom add to Street Fighter 6. No, I’m going to work within some guidelines based on MCMura‘s observations. You see, McMura noticed some kind of criteria Capcom may have been using when determining the previous Seasons’ roster additions. Namely, they have to include the following: a “boss” character, a character in need of redemption, the “cool” character and the “surefire seller” character.

These criteria seems pretty self-explanatory but, while MCMura did make his very own picks based on this, I have a few different ideas on who might make it into Season 3 based on this idea. So, let’s go look at my picks for Street Fighter 6’s Season 3’s new characters!

#1: The Boss: “Urien

As Street Fighter 6 already has 2 of the series’ more notable bosses in Akuma and M. Bison already, it does feel like slim pickings on what “boss” character Capcom would pick based on the criteria outlined. Some would say Sagat would be a good fit and, normally, I would agree. The issue I have is Sagat would be kind of a hard sell as he would have to be a towering figure when there are already huge characters like Zangief and Marisa in the game already. So, I’m opting for a different direction with “Urien” instead.

Take note of the quotation marks as I actually don’t want to see the loinclothed warrior in Season 3. Instead of “Urien” himself, I would rather see them create a new character but based her moves on Urien’s specials. Kind of like how AKI is Street Fighter 6’s version of FANG. Also, if Gill has a secretary in Kolin, shouldn’t Urien have one as well?

Like with AKI, this version of “Urien” would follow his basic template. She would still have things like the Metallic Sphere projectile as well as the Chariot Tackle. However, instead of the awkward looking Dangerous Headbutt, I would give her a more traditional uppercut. Her Super Arts would be pretty easy to translate over to Street Fighter 6 as you just know her Level 2 Super would be the good old Aegis Reflector.

#2: The One Who Deserves Redemption: Necalli

This was a tough one to pick as, in my mind, there were a lot of other Street Fighter characters who deserved much better. Initially, I thought of putting in Hakan as, despite his goofiness and general low tier status, he’s a lot of fun to control. Then there was Remy but I really couldn’t think of a way to make him different enough from Guile to make him worthy of the position. So, I had to go with my 3rd pick on my list: Necalli.

Truly, Necalli deserved so much better than what he got. He has a very cool design and his place in the Street Fighter V’s story should have made him kind of the new villain. Too bad Capcom gave up on him early on during that game’s lifespan! Necalli actually has the bones of a character who can be incredible but, for one reason or another, he wasn’t. So, why not give him a second chance by showing his true potential in Season 3?

It wouldn’t be that hard to rework Necalli into the beast he should have been. All he needs is a few tweaks to him normals but giving them a little more range and rework his frame data to give him more combo potential. Also, while I’m partial to charge motions, it was one of his main detriments so make him a motion character through and through this time around.

#3: The “Cool” Character: Makoto

When it came to choosing which “cool” character from Street Fighter’s well of characters, I had a lot to pick from. Sure, characters like Cody, Dudley and C. Viper bounced around in my head. There were also the letters like G and Q who could’ve made the cut. Ultimately, I went with a more unorthodox pick because I wanted the character to be cool but unexpected. This is why I went with Makoto.

Makoto is a “cool” character but not in the traditional sense. She doesn’t have any really flashy moves nor does she have a cool design if I’m being honest. However, in a weird way, that’s precisely why Makoto is so cool in my eyes! She’s a no-nonsense fighter who, much like Ryu, wants to prove how strong she is. She’s practically one of the most straightforward characters to come out of Street Fighter and her moveset just works in accordance with one another. This is precisely why Makoto is a fan favorite in the fighting game community. Sure, Makoto isn’t exactly beginner friendly as her walk speed is abysmal, to say the least. Still, most veteran Street Fighter players would want to see her as she actually ranks #2 during one popularity poll.

Translating Makoto into Street Fighter 6 wouldn’t be that much of a problem as, like I said, she’s a very straightforward character. Maybe Capcom should do a little tweaking to her Fukiage uppercut to make it a little more useable on grounded opponents. After that though, yeah. She should fit right in.

#4: The “Surefire Seller”: Sakura Kasugano

I mentioned Makoto was #2 in a popularity poll. Guess who was in first place? I just know 90% of you answered Sakura while the other 10% answered something different just to be cute about it. Yeah, when it comes to who would get everyone to buy the Season 3 pass, there’s no doubt that character would be the Ryu fangirl.

Even if this would be the most obvious choice, there is a little hiccup here as, since Street Fighter 6 takes place after Street Fighter III, which in itself is a major time jump after her first appearance in Street Fighter Alpha 2, Sakura would be different. She would even be a little bit older than the last time we saw her manning the arcade machines in Street Fighter V. So, her overall design in Street Fighter 6 should reflect her being more mature than her schoolgirl days.

I don’t think Capcom should change her basic gameplan and Sakura’s moves would still be essentially the same to how she played in the past. She still should have the forward moving Shouoken uppercut and have a fireball she can charge up. The only real question is how she would look like. I mean, last we saw her, Sakura was contemplating motherhood in her Street Fighter V Story ending. So, it would be interesting to see what’s happened since then and if she did find her own path for strength.

Bonus: Sodom

Well, I don’t know where to fit Sodom… but I really, really, really would want to see Sodom actually get entered in Street Fighter 6’s roster. The dumb Avatar costume pack doesn’t count! I want the real deal!

Look, I know Sodom isn’t that popular of a character and I might be the only one who actually wants to see him officially return in a new Street Fighter game. So, even though he doesn’t really fit in any of the categories mentioned, I’m still going to put him on this list as a bonus entry! It’s my list, dammit!

Byee!
